In order to find solutions for cost-effective, yet highly efficient and sustainable logistical processes, the Friedrichshafen technology group has acquired a 25 percent stake in the Swiss software company Embotech AG for the development of autonomous applications for operational yards, among other uses. According to a press release, the strategic partnership aims to optimize “safety, efficiency, and sustainability in logistics depots” while simultaneously reducing ongoing operating costs.

Embotech's software supports automated driving by enabling vehicles to make independent decisions. Based on this capability, work processes on limited work areas are now to be controlled as well. According to the information provided, this would allow for the implementation of a wide range of customized, expandable solutions in the field of Transport-as-a-Service (TaaS) in enclosed areas such as operational yards, ports, airports, mining and agricultural operations, or even bus depots.

As part of the partnership, another potential application of the software has been considered: as an intelligent and predictive speed assistant, for instance, that takes into account the extended environment, such as traffic flow, road signs, and the topographical embedding of scenarios in its control.

The cooperation with Embotech is a consistent further development of ZF's "Next Generation Mobility" strategy, says Philipp Helmich, Vice President of Vehicle Dynamics and Controls & Autonomous Driving at the ZF Division Commercial Vehicle Control Systems. It is based on a shared vision: namely, to provide reliable and at the same time globally available and applicable solutions for automated transports (Transport-as-a-Service) in the commercial vehicle sector on private grounds.

In this partnership, ZF has access to Embotech's software application, which allows vehicles to make independent decisions, it continues. ZF intends to apply this with its expertise in the areas of sensor technology, electronic control, and actuation for Level 4 (fully automated, independent driving without driver control) self-driving commercial vehicles, including the ADOPT (Autonomous Driving Open Platform Technology) technology platform.

The cooperation will initially advance the development of automated shunting solutions in the European market and subsequently worldwide, ZF further stated. To this end, ZF and Embotech are essentially providing an entire "ecosystem": this enables an improvement of customer-side operations by working with connected software solutions in autonomous, connected, and electrified vehicles and in "intelligent interaction with the infrastructure."

According to ZF, the automation of processes in operational yards is crucial for the supply chain and addresses significant issues within the commercial vehicle industry, whether they be high costs, security gaps, or the impact on the climate. The technology can contribute to reducing operational costs (TCO) while simultaneously enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability, it says.

But they also want to make traffic safer: The planned speed assistant, as another project, is intended to take into account traffic flow and the surroundings such as road signs while driving on public roads.

Jointly, they are developing cutting-edge solutions for depot automation worldwide, says Andreas Kyrtatos, Chief Executive Officer of Zurich-based Embotech AG, about the partnership. "We are pleased to further expand our collaboration with ZF through this important strategic partnership." In closed-off areas, end customers from many industries, such as vehicle manufacturers, logistics, or mining companies, can already benefit from the solution in various applications.

With the acquisition of 25 percent of Embotech's shares, ZF now also has a seat on the company's advisory board.
