Xpeng updates the P7 to the P7i
Since 2020, Xpeng has been selling the elegant P7 in China, and it has been repeatedly rumored that it would also come to Europe. After all, they discreetly started in Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Xpeng did not disclose any further concrete plans. Currently, the P7 is being updated to the P7i.
Four versions, but: Higher number means a weaker model here
The P7i comes in four versions in China, with prices starting at 249,900 Yuan, which would be approximately 34,040 Euros. The versions are called 702 Pro, 702 Max, 610 Max Performance, and 610 Wing Performance. Interestingly, the number in the model name stands for the Chinese CLTC range of the versions. However, you need to rethink: A higher number indicates a weaker model here. The two stronger 610 variants are all-wheel drive models, while the two 702 models are single-motor rear-wheel drive.
All models accelerate faster: Xpeng specifies an acceleration of 3.9 seconds (previously: 4.3 seconds) from 0 to 100 km/h for the all-wheel drive models, and 6.4 seconds (previously 6.7 seconds) for the other two. Additionally, the torque is said to have increased to 757 Nm and 440 Nm respectively (previously max. 655 Nm), indicating that Xpeng may have found some efficiency improvements in the drive systems. The improved thermal management system in the P7i likely contributed to this as well. The power output remains unchanged at 120 kW in the front and 196 kW in the rear. The update is also expected to increase the range under winter conditions by up to 15%.
Much more charging power: 175 instead of 90 kW is significant
According to the portal "CN EV Post," the maximum DC charging power is set to climb from 90 to 175 kW. Xpeng itself only mentions a charging duration of around 30 minutes for a battery charge from ten to 80 percent SoC. Previously, this applied to the increase from 30 to 80 percent charge level.
While the facelift is hardly noticeable on the exterior, more has been done on the inside: In the cockpit, the P7i features a new steering wheel, central control, and a sub-dashboard design.
The sales are also declining somewhat for Xpeng
According to "CN EV Post," the predecessor model of the P7i was long the main revenue driver for Xpeng: in 2022, it sold 59,066 times, which accounted for a total of 49 percent of the overall sales of 120,757 units in 2022. This shows that Xpeng was not growing as strongly as before: in 2021, 60,569 P7 models were sold out of 98,155 Xpeng models. Xpeng also felt the price pressure from Tesla and significantly reduced the prices for the P7 on January 17, 2023.
What does this mean?
Xpeng continues to expand, but much more slowly than before. Although it increased sales again with 120,000 units in 2022, it needs a perspective of rather 500,000+ cars for a globally stable business model. And after Tesla massively lowered its prices, Xpeng's margins are also coming under pressure.
