Xpeng Mona 03: Full-fledged sedan - in China from 15,000 euros!

Xpeng continues to push forward – this time at the base: The Mona 03, developed with Didi, will be launched in China at competitive prices starting from 119,800 Yuan, which is equivalent to just around 15,000 Euros.

Even if the Mona 03 were to cost 25,000 euros in Europe, it would still be a bargain. Because you are getting a fully-grown mid-size hatchback sedan with a 621-liter trunk and a large tailgate. The Mona M03 is the first electric vehicle developed in collaboration with the ride-hailing provider Didi. The order books for the Mona M03 opened in early August 2024, and the attractive prices are also drawing interest in China: According to the manufacturer, 10,000 orders were received in the first 52 minutes. That there is also a price war in China is shown by the rates for the Mona 03: According to earlier reports, the Mona 03 was supposed to start at 135,900 yuan (around 17,000 euros).

Battery size and drives are "right-sized"

The Mona M03 comes in three versions, whose designations are based on the CLTC range: 515, 620, and 580 Max, wherein you can safely subtract about 200 kilometers to get real values. The base model starts with a 51.8 kWh battery for a CLTC range of up to 515 kilometers. Those who assume about 300 kilometers are on the safe side even in winter. Above that, a 62.2 kWh battery is installed, which is supposed to provide a range of 620 or 580 kilometers, realistically more like 450 and around 400 kilometers. Interesting collaborations within China are also noteworthy: the batteries come from BYD's battery division "FinDreams" and use lithium iron phosphate chemistry.

The drives are "right-sized": The base 515 starts with a 140 kW electric motor and is supposed to accelerate to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds. Above that are the 160 kW versions, good for reaching 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. Interesting: the "Max" in the 580 Max stands for maximum power output or torque delivery. It offers a maximum torque of 250 Nm, where the 620 has to "make do" with 225 Nm.

Affordable prices across the board

The M03 is also supposed to cover various levels of autonomous driving. This is also meant to include functions that have so far been found only in cars priced above 200,000 yuan. All prices are set very attractively: The 515 starts at the mentioned 119,800 yuan (around 15,000 euros), the 620 at 129,800 yuan (around 16,300 euros), and the 580 Max at 155,800 yuan (around 19,500 euros). The 515 and 620 are already in production and will be delivered starting in September. The 580 Max is supposed to follow only after the Chinese New Year, so at the end of January or beginning of February 2025.

All the colors are supposed to be inspired by nature: beige is derived from rice, blue from the sky, gray from stars, black from the night, and white from fog... well then. More important for Xpeng is to achieve large volumes with the Mona - ideally in six figures per year. Xiaopeng He, Chairman and CEO of Xpeng, stated during the presentation, during which the figures for the second quarter of 2024 were also presented:

"Starting with the market launch of the Mona M03 in August, we are on the verge of entering a strong product cycle."

It remains unclear whether the Mona 03 will also be brought to the EU: Due to the tariffs, Xpeng is now looking for a production site in Europe. But as mentioned, even if the Mona 03 could be offered about 10,000 euros more expensive than in China, it would still be affordable.

What does this mean?

Xpeng is also fighting the price war in China. The Mona 03 is a fully-fledged mid-size sedan that would have been more expensive even in China. It remains to be seen where the prices for electric vehicles will settle in the long term. What is clear is that globally, at prices starting from 30,000 euros, the field becomes very competitive very quickly.
