With E-vans and E-trucks: Dachser delivers emission-free in Freiburg

According to its own statements, Dachser will exclusively deliver to the core of Freiburg's inner city emission-free with a purely electric vehicle mix consisting of Fuso eCanter, Streetscooter, and cargo bike. As a result, CO2 emissions per shipment would be reduced by 26 percent over the entire transport, according to the company.

Specifically, the logistics provider has designated the postal code area 79098, which includes parts of the districts Altstadt, Neuburg, and Oberau, as an emission-free delivery area. In this approximately 1.5-square-kilometer zone, B2B and B2C customers will now receive their general cargo shipments exclusively emission-free. Michael Gaudlitz, General Manager Dachser Logistics Center Freiburg, said:

"After successfully using an electrically-assisted cargo bike for two years, this is now the logical next step to contribute our part to improving air and quality of life in Freiburg's inner city."

For emission-free delivery, a fully electric 7.5-ton light truck type FUSO eCanter will be used, with which the goods will be delivered either directly or to the inner-city microhub of the partner VeloCarrier/Roc-Ket Cargo Bikes. There, smaller shipments will be transshipped for delivery tours using an electrically assisted cargo bike or a Streetscooter. The charging station for the electric truck is located at the Dachser branch in the south of Freiburg, in the Breisgau business park, which, like all of the logistics service provider's locations in Germany, sources its electricity 100 percent from hydropower.

According to Dachser, the CO2 emissions per shipment are reduced by an average of 26 percent over the entire transport, with the preliminary and main transport stages being carried out conventionally by diesel, while emissions of particulate matter are reduced by around 47 percent and nitrogen oxides by around 41 percent.

The innovative city logistics concept "DACHSER Emission-Free Delivery" is based on a modular toolbox for inner-city delivery. In Germany, in addition to Freiburg, the logistics provider has been delivering the Stuttgart inner city emission-free since 2018, and recently the logistics service provider has also been using DACHSER Emission-Free Delivery in Oslo. Stefan Hohm, Corporate Director Corporate Solutions, Research & Development, who is responsible for the innovation project City Distribution at Dachser, said:

"This is a promising start, but there is still a long way to go, especially when it comes to the availability of trucks with alternative drives. In selected metropolitan regions in Europe, we will successively identify hotspots in inner cities over the coming two years and implement the DACHSER Emission-Free Delivery concept."
