To meet the increasing demand in the North American region, the top-100 automotive supplier Webasto has opened a new plant in Guanajuato, Mexico. It is the company's first dedicated plant for charging solutions in the region and the group's third production site in Mexico overall.

On three lines, 140 employees currently manufacture around 10,000 charging solutions for electric vehicles per week. By the end of the year, production will be expanded to eight lines and over 20,000 units. The number of employees is also expected to grow continuously. With an area of 12,000 square meters today, an expansion by another 10,000 square meters is planned by 2025.

“Our solutions for electromobility are in demand worldwide, but we see great potential especially in the North American region,” said Marcel Bartling, Member of the Board of Management and Chief Technology Officer of Webasto SE. “The opening of the plant in Guanajuato is therefore an important strategic step for us and an investment in the future.”

Webasto had previously produced its charging solutions for the North American market together with roof systems at the Irapuato site, located a few kilometers from Guanajuato. As volume and customer demand have increased, the entire production of wall boxes and mobile chargers has now been relocated to the new, expandable site.

“We have successfully established ourselves in the North American charging market in a relatively short time and with the new plant, we are able to fully support our customers on-site in the future as well,” said Dirk Hofmann, Vice President Operations & Quality for Webasto Charging Systems.

What does this mean?

With the new plant, Webasto continues on its chosen path of transformation and further expands its business field with solutions for electromobility worldwide. In addition to wall boxes and mobile charging devices, Webasto also produces battery systems for cars and commercial vehicles as well as high-voltage heaters for hybrid and electric vehicles.
