VW: The Golf 9 will only be available as an electric vehicle – but not before 2028

Reverse course at Volkswagen: After the strategy of separating the electric ID models and the classic series did not really work out, VW plans to combine all future vehicles on a new multifunctional platform.

The Golf once seamlessly took over the sales crown from the Beetle and became one of VW's top sellers. By now, it has sold more than 37 million units, and the seventh generation was even built electrically. Then the ID.3 was supposed to replace it, which did not succeed. The current Golf was released in 2019, then just under 20,000 euros starting price and had to - also due to its exploded price of now well over 28,000 euros - yield. VW saw it as a "phase-out model" with a long production period planned with several facelifts.

This is now also going to happen. But mainly because VW has reorganized internally, according to reports from platforms like Auto Motor and Sport or E-Fahrer. VW is said to be working on the ninth generation, which will then be called the "ID. Golf" and will only be powered electrically. Until then, Golf eight and the ID.3 will continue to be built.

The question that also arises here: Will the ID.2 then become the ID. Up, and the future ID.4 become the ID. Tiguan, and the ID.7 then become the ID. Passat?

The future Golf is based on the SSP platform

The "ID.Golf" will then be based on the new SSP platform (which stands for "scalable systems platform"), which they actually wanted to be further along with. With it, they aim to be even more flexible in terms of mechanics, electronics, and digitalization and be able to depict a vast array of group models. However, such a "super platform" takes time when it has to be able to do so much. According to the latest status, until 2028 or even 2029 now. With it, they want to realize all VW brands, model series, and drives, and it should also serve as a basis for autonomous driving.

Range: From 400 kilometers - real, not according to WLTP

Still, VW has already subtly commented on the future Golf and its key data: According to Auto Motor and Sport, the future base Golf is supposed to start at 33,000 euros and offer a real - not according to WLTP - range of up to 400 kilometers. More expensive variants should also achieve a real 600 kilometers, and the batteries should be charged from 10 to 80 percent within 15 minutes. In terms of size, one can again expect 4.2 meters plus or minus x, and there will surely also be SUV derivatives like T-Roc and Co again.

Even if the data seems rather "optimistic" from today's perspective - by 2028 e-mobility will have taken another big step forward in terms of development (some manufacturers want to have their first solid-state batteries ready for series production by then), which is why the data, which essentially corresponds to today's better Golf combustion engines, should be realistic. This also applies to the price, once adjusted for inflation.

So it all sounds good, but: VW has to "hold out" with the current models of ID.3 and Golf until 2028 – and that will be the big challenge. Especially since there is likely to be little money left for maintaining the compact cars due to the large investment in SSP.

SSP is also important for the main plant in Wolfsburg: According to a VW press release, the plan in 2023 was as follows: New electrified models based on the SSP architecture (Scalable Systems Platform), which will start at the end of the decade, are to be integrated into the existing, modernized structures of the main plant. This is how the Golf successor on SSP basis is to be led into the electric future. The vehicle project originally planned for Wolfsburg, Trinity, is to move to Zwickau. From 2026, a fully electric SUV in the high-volume A-segment is also planned to roll off the assembly line in large numbers, which would be the counterpart to the T-Cross.

What does that mean?

The Golf remains a Golf, even as an ID. Golf. And it is likely to remain the center of the VW program with the ID. T-Roc (?) even in 2028 or 2029. Until then, VW has to "muddle through" with the current models a bit longer than usual. The new SSP-ID. Golf is important for Wolfsburg.
