VW is considering a cooperation with Renault for a 20,000-euro electric car.

They can't do it alone: Apparently, the Volkswagen Group is considering a collaboration with competitor Renault to launch a 20,000-euro electric car. Recently, Renault presented its idea for an electric original Twingo.

The Volkswagen Group is apparently considering plans for a cooperation with the French competitor Renault to realize a 20,000-euro electric car. According to a report by "Handelsblatt," the development of a small electric car is being discussed, based on information from several individuals familiar with the matter. Recently, the French company, led by former Seat chief Luca de Meo, presented its idea for a fully electric Twingo, which is expected to hit the market by 2025 for under 20,000 euros. However, it is said that the discussions are still at a very early stage and could also lead to nothing. Neither Renault nor Volkswagen spokespersons wanted to comment on the "speculation," according to the medium. So far, VW has only announced the ID.2All, an electric vehicle in the 25,000-euro category that is roughly the size of a Polo but is supposed to offer more space.

The new "Twingo" is set to launch in 2025, which would also be an appropriate time to replace the (still) current model that was once developed with Smart and therefore features a rear engine and rear-wheel drive but, like the second generation Twingo, never achieved the cult status of the original version. The latter is newly cited in many details. Based on its platform, Dacia is likely to build an even more affordable Spring successor. And Mitsubishi could finally create an electric Space Star successor in Europe.

However, Renault has yet to provide further details regarding the exact package: In the announcement for the capital market day of the electric car division Ampere (where the model was only referred to as "Legend"), it was stated that the well-known electric car platforms CMF-BEV and CMF-EV would be renamed "AmpR Small" and "AmpR Medium" in the future. Both of these are only somewhat suitable as bases for cheap e-mobility. It could also be that Renault is working with cheaper batteries or cell chemistry for the Twingo, which would reduce the engineering effort.

The Twingo is slated to be built again in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. Renault has already commented on the consumption as well: They aim to achieve an extremely low consumption of 10 kWh/100 km, which would mean extremely efficient engines and lightweight construction. Along with a lighter small battery?
