VW: In the future without cult currywurst

Since 1974, the most successful "VW original part," which actually runs under the number 199 398 500 A, has been manufactured according to a secret recipe – now the canteen is to be converted to vegetarian and vegan food.

It is rumored that there was once a barter deal with the chronically cash-strapped East Germany: sausages for cars from Wolfsburg. Instead, it is said to have been a trade that became a cult starting in 1974: the "Volkswagen Currywurst". Loved by VW employees in the company canteens and guests alike, and of course also at the soccer games of VFL Wolfsburg. Now, the sausage from in-house production is supposed to disappear from the menu - at least in the brand headquarters' company restaurant in Wolfsburg, it will no longer be available after the factory holiday.

According to an internal announcement, the approximately 150 recipes of the company canteen will then have to do without meat. Only occasionally will fish be offered. Many employees wanted vegetarian and vegan alternatives, and this way, the CO2 footprint can be noticeably reduced. Because the new menu also serves sustainability, as less meat consumption per week also helps the environment. At the Hannover location, the responsible "Service Factory" has already successfully implemented the concept.

How serious the employees are about the dietary change will now be shown by an interesting real-world experiment. Because in a second canteen just a few meters away on the other side of the street, the currywurst from the company's own butchery will still be available. And especially with sausages, you can make do with the right spices and the right recipes: there are now quite crunchy vegetarian and even vegan alternatives. So the currywurst as such might soon return to the menu.

Which not only the vegan and vegetarian employees and guests of VW would certainly welcome. In the pre-Corona year of 2019, around seven million "curry sausages were consumed", along with more than 550 tons of ketchup.

What does that mean?

Nowadays, it is among the simpler tasks of the meat substitute industry to offer vegan curry sausages: firm sausage mass, the same spices, curry on top, and back into the canteen with it – and still saving CO2!
