Volkswagen Australia celebrates its 70th anniversary and the arrival of the first models of the all-electric ID. family with a Guinness World Record: For this, the multiple long-distance record driver Rainer Zietlow drove an ID.4 GTX across the entire continent, creating the largest GPS image ever made by a car. It consists of the message "70 Years VeeDub" (the Australian nickname for VW) and a map section of the vast continent, covering more than 33,548 km.

To create this extraordinary motif, Zietlow and his co-driver and photographer Marius Biela drove the ID.4 GTX through remote parts of Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and the Northern Territory for 42 days. They then "framed" this with a circumnavigation of the continent. Michal Szaniecki, Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Australia explains:

"This journey underscores our ambition to establish electromobility here as well. Sand, snow, and torrential rain - few countries have such a variety of conditions at the same time of year. The ID.4 GTX is and was up to all these conditions."

The world record ID.4 GTX had already clocked more than 50,000 km before it was brought to Australia for this test drive. "Down under," it is very important: quality, durability, and range! A total of 132 charging stops were necessary for the record drive, often in outback regions where electric vehicles are still rare.

A detailed photo report of this ultimate test drive can be found at:

What does this mean?

While Citroen "down under" is giving up due to their dramatic lack of success, VW is staying – and even bringing the ID models. This fun action supports that. It will be interesting to see how the ID.4 and co. are received “down under.”
