VW and Greece want to create a model island for green mobility
The Volkswagen Group and Greece have announced their intention to implement a groundbreaking mobility concept on the Mediterranean island of Astypalea. The current transportation system on the island will be converted to e-vehicles and renewable energy sources. In the long term, Astypalea is to become a model island for climate-neutral mobility. A corresponding declaration of intent was signed by Konstantinos Fragogiannis, Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy and Openness of the Republic of Greece, and Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, in Wolfsburg and Athens. New mobility services such as car-sharing or ride-sharing will help to reduce and improve traffic. The electricity will predominantly come from locally generated renewable solar and wind energy. The project initially has a duration of six years.
"With the Astypalea project, we will find out how this vision can already be achieved today. E-mobility and intelligent mobility services will improve quality of life while contributing to a CO2-neutral future," commented VW Group CEO Herbert Diess on the unusual step.
The project focuses on an entirely new, state-of-the-art transportation system with smart mobility services such as an electric ride-sharing service operating year-round, aimed at making the currently very limited bus service more attractive. Together with local partners, part of the traditional vehicle rental will be converted into car-sharing, offering not only e-cars but also e-scooters from the Seat brand and e-bikes.
This alone is expected to significantly reduce the vehicle fleet on the island. Overall, around 1,500 internal combustion engine vehicles will be replaced by around 1,000 electric vehicles. Local business utility vehicles as well as government vehicles – such as police cars, ambulances, and the public sector fleet – are also to be electrified. Volkswagen will also install Elli wall boxes across the entire island to ensure a comprehensive charging infrastructure.
Blueprint for the Decarbonization of Mobility
The project serves as a blueprint for Volkswagen's decarbonization strategy and is therefore strongly supported by the company's independent Sustainability Council. Margo T. Oge, a member of the Sustainability Council and former Director of the Office of Transportation Air Quality at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):
