Volvo Trucks: Record Order for 100 Electric Trucks from DFDS
The Swedish truck manufacturer Volvo Trucks has received an order for 100 Volvo FM Electric trucks from DFDS, which, according to their own statements, is Northern Europe's largest shipping and logistics company. This is the largest commercial order for electric trucks from Volvo Trucks to date and one of the largest for heavy electric trucks worldwide.
"This is an important milestone in our commitment to fossil-free transport. I am very proud of the partnership we have with DFDS. Together, we are showing the world that electrified heavy-duty transport is already a viable solution today. I believe this will encourage many more customers to take their first step towards electrification," commented Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.
The first deliveries of the heavy electric distribution trucks will begin in the fourth quarter of 2022 and continue throughout 2023. The trucks can be used for both short and long transports within the DFDS logistics system in Europe, according to the company.
"At DFDS, we are determined to do our part to reduce CO2 emissions and create a sustainable supply chain. We know how important electrification is on the way to achieving our CO2 targets, and I hope that we can inspire others as we drive this important transition," explains Niklas Andersson, Executive Vice President and Head of the Logistics Division at DFDS.
The E-truck can weigh up to 44 tons (gross weight) and has a range of up to 300 kilometers. The vehicles can be charged overnight at the depot (each truck comes with an AC charger) or via high power charging during operation (DC charging). DFDS has opted for a financing solution from the Financial Services division.
Volvo sees breakthrough for electric trucks in Europe
The electrification trend in the heavy truck market is accelerating, says the Swedish manufacturer. In Europe, several hundred e-trucks over 16 tons have been registered so far this year, around 40 percent of which are electric trucks from Volvo Trucks.
"Our clear goal is to drive the transformation of electric trucks. Our market-leading position shows that we are definitely on the right track. Our goal for 2030 is for half of our globally delivered trucks to be electric vehicles," Alm further outlined.
The growing customer interest is now reflected in actual orders. The manufacturer started series production of electric commercial vehicles in 2019 as one of the first truck brands. The product range now includes six electric truck models - the Volvo FH, Volvo FM, Volvo FMX, Volvo FE, Volvo FL, and the Volvo VNR, which is sold in North America.
