Volvo Trucks: Maersk orders 110 electric trucks

The large order went to Volvo Trucks North America and builds on an earlier order of 16 trucks of the same type. By mid-2023, a total of 126 Volvo VNR Electric trucks are expected to have started operation.

The deal with Maersk is the largest single commercial order to date for Volvo's electric trucks, announced the manufacturer to the press. The order was placed by the Performance Team, which is part of the Maersk Group. The first electric trucks will be put into operation in the second quarter of 2022. All 126 vehicles are expected to be deployed by the first quarter of 2023. Peter Voorhoeve, President of Volvo Trucks North America, explains:

“Volvo Trucks is pleased to continue working with Maersk on its fleet sustainability goals and to play a key role in the company's ongoing investments in electromobility solutions.”

The Class 8 electric trucks will be utilized in California for a variety of transportation tasks, serving port and warehouse distribution routes.

The Volvo VNR Electric has a range of up to 440 kilometers and an energy storage capacity of up to 565 kWh. The truck can be charged up to 80% in 90 minutes with the six-battery pack and up to 60% with the four-battery version. It is manufactured at the Volvo Trucks New River Valley plant in Virginia, the exclusive producer of all Volvo Trucks in North America.

50% Electric Sales by 2030

Globally, Volvo Trucks has set the goal that by 2030, around 50% of all vehicles sold will be electric. Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, explains:

“We are determined to lead the electric transformation of the transport industry. The numbers are still low, but we see rapidly growing interest in Europe, North America, and other parts of the world as well.”

In 2021, orders, including letters of intent, for more than 1,100 electric trucks were received in over 20 countries. It is clearly becoming an important competitive advantage to be able to offer electric, emission-free transport.

What does this mean?

Even in the USA, where heavy electric trucks were not predicted to have a great future due to the large distances (even in distribution traffic), they are becoming increasingly popular.
