Volvo Trucks introduces active side collision avoidance

The revised emergency braking assistant can now detect pedestrians and cyclists.

Volvo Trucks has introduced the active side collision avoidance (Active Side Collision Avoidance Support System) for the FH series as well as the FM and FMX models in all markets worldwide — with the key word being active. This is an advancement of the existing turning assistant, which has been supplemented with the active braking function. Using radar sensors that detect approaching cyclists, the system can warn the driver and, if necessary, also actively brake to avoid a collision when the truck is turning towards the passenger side.

Volvo Vision: Zero Accidents

Trucks are involved in 15% of fatal traffic accidents, and city traffic can be a challenge even for the most experienced trucker, says Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic & Product Safety Director at Volvo Trucks.

"At Volvo Trucks, we are constantly working to improve the safety of our trucks to protect both the driver and other road users. This safety system to protect cyclists in the city is one of our latest innovations, bringing us one step closer to our long-term vision of zero accidents with Volvo Trucks."

Next Generation Emergency Braking System

The second new system is an emergency braking assistant with pedestrian and cyclist detection. It uses both camera and radar sensors to monitor the traffic in front of the truck. If a collision risk is detected, the system warns the driver and automatically brakes if necessary to avoid or mitigate the collision. It has been certified to already meet the new, stricter European legislation for emergency braking systems, which will not take effect until 2028. Furthermore, the system from Volvo Trucks even exceeds the upcoming regulation in terms of the traffic situations it is designed for. The modified emergency braking system will be standard equipment for all FH-series, FM, and FMX trucks in Europe from 2025 and will be available worldwide as an option.
