The Swedish truck manufacturer Volvo Group has announced the acquisition of 60 percent of Designwerk Technologies AG. The Switzerland-based company develops and markets products and engineering services in the field of electromobility and is better known under the brand name Futuricum. The investment aims to complement current competencies, particularly in niche products and specialized solutions, according to the Swedes.

"Designwerk Technologies possesses high competencies in the field of electromobility and focuses on the development, prototyping, and production of niche products in small quantities across the entire spectrum of industrial electromobility," explains Lars Stenqvist, Chief Technology Officer of the Volvo Group.

The investment will support the Volvo Group's transition to climate-neutral transport solutions in all segments, says Stenqvist. Under the Futuricum brand, the Swiss specialist manufactures customized electric trucks, mobile rapid charging stations, and high-voltage battery systems. They see a rapid and direct feedback from customers as an advantage in development. Designwerk Technologies will continue to operate as an independent company.

"We look forward to further supporting the transformation of the Volvo Group towards electromobility with additional agility and performance. By adding Volvo's size and expertise to our niche production, we can both accelerate the necessary implementation of electric vehicles and the supporting infrastructure, as well as increase the proportion of zero-emission journeys on the roads," believes Adrian Melliger, CEO of Designwerk Technologies.

Swap body truck for DPD with 700 kilometers range

Just recently, the provider handed over a fully electric swap body truck to DPD, which, according to the manufacturer, has Europe's most powerful battery in terms of capacity. The Futuricum E-Truck has been in use at DPD for several months and travels daily between the depot and the distribution center in Buchs ZH. This makes DPD one of the first to use the Futuricum Logistics 18E in distribution logistics.

Powerful vehicle technology

The basis for the electrified DPD vehicle is the chassis of Volvo's FH series. Four electric motors provide a powerful drive with a total output of 680 hp, with increased efficiency, as usual, thanks to brake energy recovery through recuperation. The DPD truck features four batteries with a total capacity of 680 kWh. According to Designwerk CEO Adrian Melliger, this is Europe's largest truck battery currently in use. With this setup, a range of over 700 km can be achieved under optimal conditions. The vehicle is also charged with green electricity at the depot.
