Currently, the truck models Volvo FH, Volvo FM, and Volvo FMX intended for regional transport and urban construction transport are being tested. The special feature: they operate exclusively on electric power. According to the company, Volvo Trucks' development in the direction of electrification is an important step towards a transport system without fossil fuels. The vehicles can have a total train weight of up to 44 tons and, depending on the battery configuration, a range of up to 300 kilometers.

Already in 2019, Volvo Trucks started the series production of the Volvo FL Electric and the Volvo FE Electric - two vehicles designed for urban distribution traffic and waste management up to 27 tons. In North America, the sale of the Volvo VNR Electric, designed for regional transport tasks, will start on December 3, 2020. In the European market, the sale of the FH/FM/FMX electric series is scheduled to begin next year, with series production set for 2022.

“By rapidly increasing the number of electrically powered trucks, we want to support our customers and their transport clients in achieving their ambitious sustainability goals. We are determined to continue paving the way for our industry into a sustainable future," said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.

The climate targets decided across the EU are also driving Volvo Trucks towards a transport transition: The company aims to develop battery-operated and electrically driven vehicles in the next decade, particularly tailored for demanding and heavy tasks in long-distance transport. Models based on fuel cell drive are expected to go on sale in the second half of this decade, while the end goal is set for 2040 to let the entire product range of Volvo Trucks operate without fossil energy sources. In practice, there will first be a transitional phase in which a mixed fleet of trucks will be operated before the final switch can be fully implemented.

"Our chassis are designed in such a way that it does not matter what drive is used. Our customers can purchase multiple Volvo trucks of the same model, the only difference being that some are electric and others are powered by gas or diesel. In terms of product features like driver environment, reliability, and safety, all our vehicles meet the same high standards. Drivers should be familiar with their vehicles and be able to operate them safely and efficiently, regardless of the fuel used," explains Roger Alm.

From the company's perspective, the transition to a more sustainable transportation sector is primarily about making the switch as smooth as possible for transportation companies so that they can adapt accordingly. The solutions offered must operate without fossil fuels and enable transport entrepreneurs to achieve the necessary level of profitability and productivity – with holistic solutions that provide long-term security, economic efficiency, and predictability for the companies.
