Volvo Buses: How does e-mobility work in the heat of Dubai?

Where are the challenges of electrification in hot climates, what should the focus be on? In collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai (RTA), the Swedes are starting a six-month field trial with two electric buses in the emirate.

The Dubai project follows recent global test series by Volvo Buses (including in Mexico), where the Swedish e-mobility solutions were tested in warm climates with ambient temperatures often exceeding 40°C and with buses at full capacity. (Photo: Volvo Buses)

The capabilities of Volvo's electric mobility solution are at the center of the operational trial by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), which will test opportunity charging, fast charging on the road, in Dubai for the first time. As part of the collaboration between the emirate and the Swedish bus manufacturer, the two Volvo electric buses will run on a specially designed route to test the new electric charging infrastructure set up in collaboration with ABB between the La Mer and Al Sufouh stations with intermediate stops.

“Our goal is to offer complete solutions that enable the public transportation sector worldwide to transition to electric mobility. The partnership with Dubai closely follows the launch of our global BZL Electric chassis and demonstrates the confidence in our electric mobility solutions and our commitment to providing sustainable electric bus systems,” says Dan Pettersson, SVP, Business Unit Chassis at Volvo Buses.

The focus of the ongoing operational test is on the impact of road conditions in the region, temperatures, and higher air conditioning requirements on the energy storage systems of Volvo Buses – important data and insights are hoped to be gained here for the future operation of electric buses in hot climate regions around the world.

Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the RTA, described the project as “a unique collaboration between government agencies and the private sector and an important step towards providing sustainable transport solutions in line with Dubai’s energy and carbon reduction strategy by 2030.” The comprehensive experience and expertise of Volvo in this area will be of inestimable value during the transition, Al Tayer said.
