Volkswagen plant in Wrzesnia run completely on solar energy for the first time
The commercial vehicle plant in Września, Poland, owned by Volkswagen Poznań (VWP), was fully powered by solar energy for the first time last Friday. Thanks to optimal weather conditions, the photovoltaic system on the factory premises was able to supply 100% of the required electricity. The system is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. It comprises 25,000 modules with a capacity of 15.2 MW.
“The photovoltaic system inaugurated at the Września plant is a major step towards completely self-sufficient energy supply and sustainable, environmentally friendly production,” says Stefanie Hegels, CEO of Volkswagen Poznań. “It also ensures that we have access to price-stable energy.”
Second part recently completed
The photovoltaic park was built in two phases: The first part went into operation in 2023, and the second part was recently completed together with the company Quanta Energy. With an area of 22 hectares, the facility is among the largest "on-site" photovoltaic parks connected to a factory in Europe and in the entire Volkswagen Group. On average, the facility will cover about 20% of the electricity needs of the VWP plant in Września throughout the year. For the first time, weather conditions were so favorable that the electricity generated in one day was able to power the entire production. In Września, the Crafter is among the vehicles built.

Polish Plants as Pioneers
The brands of the Volkswagen Group have set the goal that by 2040 all production sites will produce in a climate-neutral manner. The Polish plants play a pioneering role in this. Volkswagen Poznań has been operating its production sites exclusively with green energy since 2019. The plant in Września has particularly favorable conditions. The large area allows for further diversification of energy sources in the long term. Further projects for the use of renewable energies are already in planning, including an additional photovoltaic system with a capacity of 3.1 MW and a 6.5 MW rooftop installation. An administrative procedure for the construction of wind turbines on the site has also already been initiated.
