Volkswagen plans to advance "Over-the-Air" software updates

The ID.3 and ID.4 models are profoundly updatable online with the latest software, and the first over-the-air updates are expected to be available starting this summer. A new project unit will coordinate the rollout.

Not far-fetched: VW aims to catch up with Tesla in software updates - and now enables these via WLAN or mobile network. Existing customers, however, still have to visit the workshop once more. | Photo: VW

The automobile manufacturer Volkswagen aims to advance in air interface technology and has now introduced a reportedly profound technical update for the ID.3 and ID.4 models, which can be installed via Wi-Fi or the mobile network. The software Version ID.2.1, which in turn creates the technical prerequisites for Over-the-Air updates, has been on board all newly produced ID. models since Week 8, the manufacturer advertises.

From summer, owners of ID. vehicles will be provided with an update every three months, assures the provider. These updates can include not only the optimization of software performance but also new functions and customization options. Existing customers will need to visit their dealer once. With the new software, it will then be "for the first time in the volume segment" possible to update, among other things, built-in control units in the vehicle, without the customer needing to visit the workshop. The first Over-the-Air updates are currently being successfully tested on over 3,000 company cars.

"Volkswagen is driving the digitalization of its products forward at a rapid pace and is transforming into a complete provider of hardware, software, and services. The introduction of over-the-air updates is the next important step in our transformation into a tech company and the development of new business models," says Ralf Brandstätter, Chairman of the Volkswagen brand.

This is intended to keep the models up-to-date over their lifecycle. Over-the-air updates would also be "the new normal" in cars in the future, Thomas Ulbrich, Board Member for Technical Development at Volkswagen, is certain. Moreover, a newly established project unit ID.Digital is supposed to drive the further development of the all-electric model family and coordinate the implementation of over-the-air updates. The "agile working method" of the project team will set new standards in the maintenance of software with short update cycles and flexible consideration of customer wishes, they promise.
