Volkswagen explores leather made from industrial hemp with Revoltech

Leather from industrial hemp: For sustainable material for future vehicle interiors, the Wolfsburg-based company is collaborating with the start-up Revoltech. By 2028, they aim to develop a new surface material for the automotive sector and 100% bio-based artificial leather from hemp residues.

Volkswagen has entered into a cooperation with the German start-up company Revoltech GmbH from Darmstadt. The aim is the research and development of sustainable materials based on industrial hemp. These could be used as sustainable surface materials in Volkswagen models starting in 2028. The material, made from 100% biobased hemp, utilizes waste products from the regional hemp industry. It can be produced on existing industrial facilities and recycled or composted at the end of its use in automobiles. Initial presentations to customers have already shown very positive resonance and acceptance of the new material.

“In the search for new materials, we are very open to new ideas from various industrial sectors. In Technical Development, we increasingly rely on innovative, creative, and sustainable solutions to develop our vehicles in a holistic resource-conserving manner," explains Kai Grünitz, Board Member for Technical Development at the Volkswagen brand.

For Andreas Walingen, Head of Strategy for the Volkswagen brand, "the sustainable management of resources is an important pillar of the company strategy Accelerate. The aim is to align customer demands, sustainability requirements, and corporate interests. The collaboration between Revoltech and Volkswagen is a good example of how start-ups and established companies can benefit from each other through targeted collaboration of their respective strengths – with the goal of preparing innovations for deployment in cars as quickly as possible."

“Our innovative surface material LOVR™, which we are developing and testing in cooperation with Volkswagen for the automotive industry, is scalable and groundbreaking for sustainability in the automotive industry," promotes Lucas Fuhrmann, CEO and Co-Founder of Revoltech GmbH.

Together with the startup Revoltech GmbH, Volkswagen's advanced development division is working on a material innovation as a substitute for artificial leather. This material consists of so-called industrial hemp, which is cultivated for the food industry, and is a 100% natural, purely biological single-layer sheet material called LOVRTM. This abbreviation stands for leather-free, oil-free, vegan, and residue-based and is being specifically developed for the automotive sector, as outlined by the manufacturer. The hemp fibers are bonded with an adhesive on a purely biological basis in a special process and processed into a high-quality surface material. It possesses complete circularity due to regional cultivation, as it is fully recyclable or compostable at the end of its life cycle.

Residues from the Hemp Industry

For production, residues from the hemp industry that have no further use are processed. Additionally, it can be manufactured on already existing industrial facilities, making it quickly scalable – and thus suitable for future mass production. Volkswagen's material technology, design, component development divisions, the Volkswagen Group Innovation, as well as the startup Revoltech GmbH are pooling their expertise to incorporate as many perspectives as possible into the development work. Together with the component development division, potential application areas are being identified. A possible application is being targeted for vehicle projects starting from 2028. In customer surveys, the material was very well received.
