Jaecoo 06 instead of Icar 03, no matter: MUST HAVE! This is the 4.4-meter electric car that we would have expected from Suzuki or others—essentially a fully everyday-usable electric Jimny that is still independent enough to stand on its own.

We get in and realize: Great design (naturally oriented towards Defender and similar, but that’s exactly how it should be), exciting material mixes, and comfortably enough space for four tall passengers. And, what excites us the most: Where other Chery products like Omoda 5 and Jaecoo 7 PHEV could stand to improve for Europe with their rather soft suspensions and indirect steering, this cult box drives as pleasantly crisp as it looks!

Surprisingly well-tuned suspension

Clean steering with a small grippy steering wheel, not too much body movement yet still smart enough over hard bumps. Fits! The brake could be a bit more aggressive, and the ESP could regulate a bit more stringently, but in everyday use, this is also fine. The two electric motors deliver 135 plus 70, a total of 205 kW, so there's some power available.

In our opinion, the controls are more digitized than necessary: A rotary push-knob, even more kitschy than BMW’s, regulates the driving modes, of which there are three for the road and four for off-road, as the Jaecoo 06 always comes as an all-wheel drive. However, the differences between "Eco" and "Sport" are negligible.

We were surprised by the displayed range of around 500 kilometers—though our test car must have only been driven very gently. Although the Chinese CLTC range is 501 km, the battery's 69.77 kWh is rather suitable for about 350 km plus or minus, which is entirely okay. But we also noticed with the electric Omoda 5 that Chery seems to have quite a good handle on efficiency. Jaecoo states the charging time from 30 to 80 percent as 30 minutes. Maybe there's a bit more potential for Europe?

The weight? Surprisingly low!

Efficiency also includes the low curb weight: The datasheet indicates 1,892 kg for the top version! And the turning radius of 11.4 meters is acceptable as well.

2.71-meter wheelbase provides plenty of space even in the rear, where the headrests could certainly extend further. As is often the case with such cars, the trunk isn't overly large in its standard form, but: You can fold down the seat surfaces, not just the backrests, creating a fantastic square loading box with a good amount of usable space.

Unfortunately, it lacks clever storage compartments and a front trunk, and the rear bench can only be folded in a 60:40 split. Despite this, the Jaecoo 06 makes an extremely likable and convincing debut—especially since it has no competitors.
