VM survey on China tariffs: Clearly undecided

Interesting result with high participation: Supporters and opponents of the e-car tariffs against China are evenly balanced, a reflection of the public debate.

Neck-and-neck race in our current survey, with high participation: The question of tariffs apparently concerns our community as much as it does us. And leaves them equally divided. "Are the EU's electric car tariffs against China the right path?" we asked. And the razor-thin, relative majority of 46 percent of the 151 participants decided: "No, they provoke counter-tariffs and also affect German manufacturers. The market regulates it; so far, Chinese e-cars have been more slow sellers" (70 votes). Only 9 percent positioned themselves in the middle, believing: "Maybe, at least temporarily, the measure is necessary to create fair competition conditions." (13 votes) And with a clear "Yes, absolutely, the Chinese manufacturers are massively funded by state money, no chance for domestic manufacturers to compete," 45 percent responded (68 votes).

The tendency results in a majority in favor of tariffs when including the "maybe" camp. Ultimately, however, the result also reflects the division of the public debate among politics, associations, and companies. Economists and climate protection experts are quite certain about one thing: Without the quick and short-term boost of inexpensive electric cars from China, the climate targets are hardly achievable. In the medium and long term, it is important to strengthen local value creation - even if it involves the establishment of Chinese manufacturers in the EU, as is already happening in some cases.
