VM Survey: Hybrid Boom - Bridge or Brake?

Varied picture in our latest survey: Although half believe hybrids are primarily an obstacle to e-mobility, others think it depends, and a third sees them as a bridge.

Not usually worth it: Instead of buying a hybrid today, switching to a purely electric drive would be more consistent - and, in the long term, cheaper. | Photo: Toyota

Diverse opinions in the community from our latest survey on the hybrid boom: "Are they a bridge or a brake for the transformation?" we asked. And we received a definite answer from half: "Clearly a brake: They delay the shift in propulsion and weaken Germany as an e-market. If anything, then fully electric, the offering is there!" said 50% (42 votes). With a decisive "Maybe": They can contribute if, for example, PHEVs are consistently used electrically," answered 20% (17 votes). And nearly a third found: "Yes, definitely a bridge because they allow a risk-free entry into electrification at reasonable costs" (30%, 25 votes). Once again, it shows that, even on the topic of hybrids, it depends on what you make of it.

Test Experiences: Fuel Consumption Remains

Our test experiences with hybrids are rather mixed: The electric range of PHEVs is okay for short distances, but on long trips, the twin hearts with their small turbocharged gasoline engines tend to "guzzle" fuel, spoiling the balance. Closed hybrids and trendy 48-volt mild hybrids still consume approximately five liters/100 km of fossil fuel, which is simply too much over an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years — and soon, quite expensive. For frequent and long-distance drivers, a diesel might be almost better. Or perhaps one of the long-range pure electric cars. Everyone needs a break every 500 kilometers anyway... And then you have a future-proof solution that becomes even cleaner over time with the increasingly renewable energy mix, unlike an aging combustion engine. We believe hybrids were a bridge over twenty years ago when Toyota made the technology suitable for the masses. Today, there are so many good electric cars that the hybrid has fulfilled its purpose.
