VM Presentation Maxus eDeliver 5: The next coup is already coming to the IAA

Blow after blow at the SAIC subsidiary: Now they have presented the first details of the new eDeliver 5, which partially cannibalizes the eDeliver 3 and eDeliver 7. However, it is more aimed at urban uses.

With the Maxus eDeliver 5, the subsidiary of the Chinese state-owned SAIC Maxus continues to advance: The latest electric transporter, which will make its official Germany premiere at the IAA Transportation in Hannover (September 17 to 22, 2024), is the first model based on the so-called MILA platform. The modular, intelligent, and lightweight architecture aims to set new standards in loading volume and payload as well as in comfort, connectivity, handling, and efficiency. The pure electric van, which is available in two lengths, is intended to bridge the gap between the small eDeliver 3 and the larger eDeliver 5 and 7. However, it offers so much that at least parts of the 3 and 7 might be cannibalized.

Space for up to three people - Through-loading for maximum length

Up to three people can find space in the single cabin available at market launch, with a double cabin to follow at a later date. As an L1 model, the transporter offers a loading volume of 6.6 cubic meters, which increases to 7.7 cubic meters in the 5.25-meter-long L2 variant, one cubic meter more than the eDeliver 7 in its two versions offers. Whether the exhibited high-roof version will also be available is still unclear according to those responsible. The maximum payload is 1,190 kilograms (L2 with three seats), once again overshadowing the larger sibling. The "little one" is also on par with its towing capacity: Both variants can handle up to 1,500 kilograms on the hook.

Slender silhouette

There are differences in width, where the 5 aims to be significantly more city-friendly than the 2.03-meter wide eDeliver 7: The roughly 2.65 meters (L1) and 3.10 meters (L2) of length relative to the exterior length offer an extremely spacious cargo area with a width of 1.25 meters between the wheel arches, enough for a Euro pallet. A through-loading hatch also allows for transporting longer materials. Two 180-degree opening rear doors and two side sliding doors, together with the low loading edge, simplify access.

Efficient Motor, Flat Battery

Propulsion is provided by a 120 kW/163 HP electric motor, which delivers 240 Nm of torque. The compact unit is designed to take up little engine space, reflected in one of the shortest front overhangs in its class at 650 millimeters. Power consumption is 21.0 kWh per 100 kilometers (L1 - WLTP combined). The powertrain is paired with a 64 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, enabling the e-Transporter to achieve up to 335 kilometers (WLTP combined) per charge, and even up to 489 kilometers in urban settings. A charging stop at 70 kW fast-charging stations takes an acceptable 42 minutes, while the company’s own wall box charges conveniently overnight at 11 kW.

The high-voltage battery features the so-called CTP structure, where the battery cell is directly integrated into the battery pack. This makes the battery around ten centimeters thinner than conventional battery packs. The standard liquid-based cooling/heating system is designed to ensure optimal operating temperature. Additional safety is provided by a battery warranty of eight years or 200,000 kilometers.

Striking Design, Connected Cockpit

The "Rounded Rectangle" design language not only gives the van a "clean" look in the iPhone style but also improves efficiency and aerodynamics. In the brightly designed interior, a digital instrument display and a 12.3-inch touchscreen, which serves as the central control unit for, among other things, the multimedia system and the smartphone integrated via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, ensure contemporary connectivity. For safety, an array of assistance systems is set to ensure protection. Further details on equipment, market launch, and prices will be announced at IAA Transportation.
