Vimcar: SME fleets as drivers of transformation

Small and medium-sized enterprises are ahead of the overall market in the transformation from combustion engines to electric. And they are already significantly saving costs in the process.

Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Germany are investing more in the transportation transition than private car users. As such, these companies' vehicle fleets show a comparatively high proportion of alternative drives and are higher than the national average. This is evident from a data analysis by fleet software specialist Vimcar. Even in 2022, modernizing their own fleets is on the agenda for many companies, says Andreas Schneider, Managing Director of telematics specialist Vimcar.

He sees the German middle class playing a pioneering role in the transformation. The central role in the transportation transition is assigned to electric cars. As the data shows, the proportion of vehicles with alternative drives among Vimcar customers is currently 6.78 percent. Of these, 1.67 percent are purely electric cars, and 5.11 percent are hybrids. In comparison, the Federal Motor Transport Authority reported a share of 2.72 percent of alternatively powered vehicles for the entire car fleet in Germany at the beginning of 2021. Of these, 0.64 percent were purely electric cars.

Electrification intensively occupies German SMEs

SMEs are thus already ahead of the total German fleet, the fleet analysts state. However, modernizing their own fleet is still pending for many SMEs. A recent survey among fleet managers revealed that 49 percent of respondents with specific annual plans listed electrifying their own fleet among the greatest challenges they expect for 2022. For many of them, this also goes hand-in-hand with the concrete goal of reducing CO2.

Further Automation of Processes Desired

Equally important, however, is the pursuit of even more automation (50.6 percent) and digitalization (41.5 percent) of internal processes. The use of software solutions, especially in connection with telematics, can optimize costs and administrative processes, thereby partially offsetting the investments for electrification, the provider also promotes its software solutions.

"This is aided by the fact that electric vehicles are becoming financially more attractive. In 2021, we observed a rise in monthly fuel costs per car for internal combustion engines from about €300 to nearly €500 among our customers," reports Schneider.

Charging electric cars is significantly cheaper. Additionally, the federal government has announced plans to further adjust state subsidies and taxation to favor environmentally-friendly vehicles.

Vimcar considers itself a leading provider of fleet management software for SMEs in the DACH region. The SaaS offering (Software as a Service) covers various business mobility tasks from vehicle tracking, digital logbooks, route planning, and vehicle management to key management. So far, the provider has equipped 100,000 vehicles with its software, including the fleets of Deutsche Bahn, Allianz, Free Now, Knauf, Koziol, Nippon Seiki, and Zalando.
