VDIK Statistics: Registrations of Alternative Drives Plummet in November

Noticeable decline in new registrations of alternative drives in November - only full hybrids are still seeing gains. After all, the overall view of the year for BEVs is positive: They recorded an increase of 28.2 percent and, with nearly half a million units, are slowly becoming market-relevant.

New registrations of passenger cars with alternative drive systems plummeted by 15.9 percent in November compared to the same month last year, as noted by the Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers. A total of 245,701 new passenger cars were registered by the Federal Motor Transport Authority, of which 124,494 have alternative drive technologies. This corresponds to a total market share of 51 percent in November. Since the beginning of the year, around 13.6 percent more new electric vehicles, hybrids with and without plugs, as well as gas-powered cars have been registered compared to the same period last year. With a total of 1,249,676 units, alternative drive forms held a market share of 48 percent between January and November 2023. Among vehicles with alternative drives, only hybrids without plugs showed positive growth compared to the same month last year (+38.4 percent).

Of the 60,463 newly registered hybrid vehicles, 7,486 are full hybrids, with VDIK brands, including mainly hybrid pioneer Toyota, holding a market share of 93 percent. In contrast, new registrations of electric vehicles plummeted significantly compared to November last year (-38.6 percent). With 44,942 newly registered purely battery-electric passenger cars (BEVs), the market was around 22.5 percent below the registration volume in November 2022. For plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), the market shrank by 59.3 percent to 18,124 units. The noticeable decline in the growth of registrations of vehicles with alternative drives is due to the strong year-end surge experienced by the electric vehicle market in 2022, caused by the reduction of the environmental bonus from January 2023. For PHEVs, the funding ended completely at the end of 2022.

In the overall view for the months of January to November, 2023 showed a growth in BEV registrations by 28.2 percent (469,565 units), while PHEV registrations overall declined by 46 percent (157,830 units). Up to and including November 2023, 11,827 LPG passenger cars were also newly registered (-14.4 percent), along with 257 fuel cell passenger cars. The VDIK regularly updates the list of electric vehicles from international manufacturers. VDIK member companies currently offer over 200 electric models (passenger cars and commercial vehicles) that customers in Germany can order. The VDIK electric list can be accessed here. In addition to vehicles with alternative drive technologies, between January and November 2023, 903,872 gasoline cars and 449,178 diesel vehicles were also newly registered. This brings the market share of gasoline cars to 35 percent, with diesel vehicles at around 17 percent.
