VDA wants to calculate emissions in the supply chain
How can emissions in the automotive industry's supply chain be calculated? This question is being addressed by the Association of European Vehicle Logistics (ECG) and the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). The two associations are jointly developing a methodology to calculate and communicate emissions.
As they announce in a joint press release, the publication is planned for the third quarter of 2023. The methodology, it says, will harmonize existing methods for accounting greenhouse gases and will be based on the ISO standard 14083 (Greenhouse gases - Quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions from transport operations). The project aims to connect actors in the automotive industry, such as vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, and logistics service providers. It receives external support from the International Transfer Center for Logistics ITCL.
ECG President Wolfgang Göbel emphasizes:
“Standardization is the key to enabling fair and just comparisons of emissions between modes of transport. The use of the methodology is an important building block for the industry’s investments on the path to the decarbonization of freight transport.”
Dr. Marcus Bollig, responsible as VDA Managing Director for Products & Value Creation, adds:
Translated automatically from German."The development of a unified methodology for calculating and reporting emissions in the automotive supply chain is an important step towards achieving climate goals. We are pleased to be able to make a decisive contribution to this process."
