"Vampire Drain": Minimizing Standby Energy Loss in Electric Cars

The diagnostic app Carly identifies reasons for battery discharges. The "Vampire Drain" in Tesla models is apparently particularly high.

The energy consumption of electric vehicles is significantly influenced by driving behavior. However, various settings and potential errors in standby mode can cause the vehicle to unnecessarily lose energy. Tesla drivers, in particular, curse the passive battery drain, which they also refer to as "Vampire Drain". This can be as high as 10% in Tesla models.

The Munich-based company Carly now enables the detection of previously undiscovered errors that lead to battery loss through a diagnostic app, and subsequently offers repair suggestions.

Active Battery Discharge in Passive Standby Mode

Compared to other electric vehicles, Tesla models exhibit the highest battery loss. This results from various causes, including the active Sentry Mode. This mode requires continuous monitoring by cameras and thus consumes comparatively more energy. Additionally, defects in door handles, preconditioning for scheduled departures, and Dog Mode strain the battery and require frequent recharging, drawing power from the HV battery. Regular vehicle status checks via the Tesla app or third-party apps also contribute to energy loss. Low temperatures also accelerate faster battery discharge.

Simple Solution for Tesla Drivers

The car-tech company has integrated the new "Vampire Drain Check" feature into its auto-diagnosis app since October, specifically developed for Tesla models. An OBD adapter, which is connected to the vehicle, analyzes the electronic processes in the Tesla within 24 hours and identifies the cause of the energy loss. The results are displayed in the corresponding app, where drivers can find hints and tips to stop the energy loss and fix it themselves.

“The Carly Vampire Drain Check is not only the first technical solution against this battery drain in Tesla vehicles, but is also compatible with any Carly OBD adapter in conjunction with the app for iOS and Android. It costs only 64.98 euros per year. For comparison: An unnecessary discharge of 15 kW costs drivers 8 euros – with 50 charges, this quickly adds up to 400 euros per year,” comments Avid Avini, co-founder and CEO of Carly.
