The ride-hailing service Uber is opening its app to all taxi companies throughout Germany. Until now, one could only book rides with Uber in 16 German cities. From now on, taxi drivers and rental car companies across the country can be brokered by Uber. This allows companies to tap into additional revenue streams without monthly membership fees or long-term contracts and significantly increase their occupancy rates and revenues, the company stated.

Uber Changes Strategy

Uber changed its strategy worldwide months ago. Originally, Uber mainly brokered the services of taxi competitors. Now, the company is also trying to bring taxi drivers onto its platform. In cities like Berlin and Munich, taxis can already be booked through the app of the U.S.-founded company. According to Uber, around 20 percent of all taxis in the capital already cooperate with the brokerage platform. Nationwide, there are more than 4000 taxi drivers.

Do taxis also benefit from digitalization?

Christoph Weigler, head of Uber Germany, said that by opening the app to all taxi drivers nationwide, Uber is emphasizing its interest in being a partner to the taxi industry in Germany.

“Taxis can also benefit from digitalization, active customer acquisition, and the high demand on our platform.”

Booking services digitally has become the standard.

“With the Uber app, we offer the technological solution and provide taxi drivers with additional orders in a simple and transparent manner.”

Uber as a Competitor to Traditional Taxi Dispatch Centers

With the new nationwide offering, Uber is entering into competition with traditional taxi dispatch centers that arrange rides for taxi drivers. However, the Uber service is also competing with platforms like Bolt, which primarily arrange services from rental car companies. The traditional taxi industry, like the Berlin Taxi Association, accuses these rental car companies of not adhering to legal regulations and in some cases committing social fraud. Uber also competes with the Freenow platform, which has primarily mediated taxi rides since its founding in 2009.

Uber Cooperates with Local Taxi and Rental Car Companies

Uber emphasized that it cooperates exclusively with local, licensed taxi and rental car companies that provide transportation services.

"The drivers of the partner companies all possess a passenger transport license and meet all the requirements for commercial passenger transport. All rides are accordingly fully insured."
