"TrueTime": New Certificate for Truly Green Electricity
The Swiss company Juice is taking the next consistent steps – including "truly green" electricity for the company's founder, Erni. He also has a consistent view on this: because many green electricity labels already exist. However, they only evaluate the production conditions. The most important aspect is being forgotten: simultaneity. Green electricity can only be truly green if it is produced at the moment it is consumed. With "TrueTime," the Swiss are now founding a label that sees simultaneity as the main feature of green electricity and guarantees that electricity is truly green.
The goal: TrueTime should make a big difference!
The problem with the previous green electricity labels is that the buyer cannot be sure whether their electricity was obtained from renewable energies or not. Most of the time, it is produced at a completely different time than it is needed and then resold at good prices within the seamlessly interconnected European power grid. At the moment the buyer needs electricity, it may be necessary to purchase the electricity again. But then it is usually sourced from coal-fired or nuclear power plants. And thus, the so-called green electricity is no longer clean.
The "TrueTime" label aims to prevent exactly this. Statutes with clear guidelines define the certification procedure. The audit is conducted annually by specialists from the renowned and independent certification organization SQS. All power plants operated with renewable energies, essentially water, sun, biomass, and wind, are eligible for certification. The crucial factor is the proof of at least minute-by-minute congruence between production and consumption. This means that the power plants or energy providers must read the consumption values of their customers in real-time and align them with their production.
The first organization to be certified with the "TrueTime" label is Eros Electric from Switzerland. The electricity from Eros Electric is generated by the Eros hydroelectric plants Frisal in Breil-Brigels and Eglisau. Users can purchase the required annual amount of electricity from Eros. Additionally, anyone who drives a Tesla can connect their vehicle directly to the power plant. Each charging process is produced in real-time at the power plant.
The electricity is still supplied by the responsible energy provider, as the Swiss electricity market is not yet liberalized. Eros ensures that the electricity is delivered simultaneously with consumption, guaranteeing that it is green.
What does that mean?
Ernie is right: As soon as electricity needs to be stored, it becomes less green – or in the worst case, not sustainably produced at all. The only downside: Even the electricity from Eros Electric or other "True Time"-certified providers cannot be delivered directly to the whole world. If you obtain electricity according to the "True Time" certificate, you receive energy generated at the correct time, but in fact, you often draw it from another grid. Nevertheless: A commendable and factually correct and consistent approach!
