Transport Minister's Appeal to the BMVI: Municipalities Should Be Able to Decide on 30 km/h Speed Limits Themselves
New movement on the topic of 30 km/h speed limits: As announced by the Conference of Transport Ministers, the round of 16 state ministers unanimously welcomes the initiative of almost 600 cities "for more freedom of decision in speed limits" after what is reported to have been a "controversial discussion". It is believed that "the municipalities should in the future be facilitated in imposing speed limits of 30 km/h within urban areas even on roads of supra-local traffic (federal, state, and district roads) as well as on other major roads and roads with right of way, based on clearly defined criteria," according to the committee.
"The Conference of Transport Ministers therefore requests the BMVD to adapt the road traffic regulations accordingly. The BMVD is requested to present these criteria together with the country-open working group by the next Conference of Transport Ministers."
This unanimous vote by all 16 federal states is seen by the initiative "Livable Cities through Appropriate Speeds" as a great success, and now it is up to the BMVD.
