Toyota: Mirai II becomes a long-distance vehicle - and more affordable

The second generation of the fuel cell sedan focuses on efficiency rather than high performance and increases the range to up to 650 kilometers. They aim to sell ten times more of them, starting at 63,900 euros.

The Japanese automaker Toyota has now released further details on the second generation of its Mirai fuel cell sedan, which is set to hit the market soon. Based on the modular GA-L platform, the inclusion of a third hydrogen tank (total 5.6 kg H2) is made possible, which is expected to increase the range by one-third to up to 650 kilometers. The fully newly developed fuel cell system, which now sits under the hood, is also said to ensure optimal weight distribution of 50:50, which the manufacturer claims enhances the vehicle's agility.

The even more compact and power-dense lithium-ion high-voltage battery (previously nickel-metal hydride) with a capacity of 4 Ah (44.6 kg) and the 134 kW strong synchronous electric motor (300 Nm torque) are positioned above the rear axle. The maximum output of the newly designed fuel cell with solid polymer increases from 114 to 128 kW, with a power rating of 5.4 kW per liter, claiming a new benchmark. Despite a twelve percent increase in performance, the optimized components inside the housing weigh in at about 50 percent less mass.

Efficiency takes precedence over performance: 175 km/h must suffice

In addition, the 1.9-ton Mirai II offers more space to passengers in the sedan, which has grown by a good eight centimeters to an impressive length of 4.97 meters, thanks also to a longer wheelbase. The flatter silhouette with a height of 1.47 meters is intended to improve aerodynamics, with a cW value of 0.29. As a result, the manufacturer promises driving stability that corresponds to the characteristics of a front-wheel drive vehicle, as well as more comfort and safer handling. The chassis now features new multi-link suspensions at the front and rear instead of the previous MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam construction at the rear. The acceleration values of 9.2 seconds from 0-100 km/h, however, indicate that the focus was not on performance. The top speed is limited to 175 km/h.

Toyota expects sales to exceed the previous generation by a factor of ten, equating to up to 30,000 units. The pillars of this growth are seen not only in the improved performance and greater attractiveness of the new model but also in the selling price which is nearly 20 percent lower, at 63,900 euros, enabled by the advancements in hydrogen vehicle technology. This is 20,000 euros less than its predecessor.
