Toyota defies the crisis: Over half are hybrids

Thanks to the hybrids in particular, the manufacturer is able to hold its ground well and achieves the best result in a third quarter since 2009.

The Japanese car manufacturer Toyota continues to defy the Corona crisis in Germany. In the third quarter of the year, the provider recorded 22,478 new registrations in the German passenger car market. This not only puts the brand above the level of the same period last year (+7.8 percent), but also achieved the best result in a third quarter since 2009, the Japanese company reported with satisfaction. The market share in the period between July and September was 2.6 percent, according to Toyota, the highest value in a third quarter in ten years. The brand is thus continuing to develop significantly better than the overall market, which shrank by around six percent in the third quarter of the year compared to the same period last year.

Hybrid works even without subsidies: Every second vehicle

Sales also developed against the trend in September: While Toyota's new registration figures rose by 13.7 percent compared to the same month last year, the overall market increased by only 8.4 percent. The market share rose to 2.9 percent. Electrification is seen as the main driving force behind the brand's success. In the third quarter, more than every second customer in Germany chose a new Toyota vehicle with hybrid drive. This is all the more remarkable as the plug-in hybrid version of the SUV RAV4, the first subsidized electrified passenger car, was only recently launched on the market. So far, Toyota does not have any purely battery-electric models; only the fuel-cell sedan Mirai falls under the federal subsidy regime.

"In the current situation, we are particularly pleased with this outstanding development," explained Mario Köhler, Director of Sales, After Sales and Network Development at Toyota Germany.
