TomTom and Cariad develop next generation navigation for VW
Volkswagen's software and technology subsidiary Cariad and geolocation specialist TomTom have announced the joint development of a new in-car navigation system for the Volkswagen Group. The system is intended to combine TomTom’s expertise in hybrid navigation and industry-leading traffic services with Cariad’s capabilities in user experience and vehicle integration. The multi-year contract covers all global markets except China and continues an existing long-term collaboration. The VW subsidiary, which works on software and hardware platforms for all brands of the Wolfsburg-based group, is to develop the navigation UI/UX and map visualization, promising a "unique navigation experience." To ensure the smoothest operation across infotainment and driver assistance systems, VW's software house aims to tightly integrate the navigation into the vehicle platform. The group’s global fleet scaling and its data are expected to continually improve the quality and coverage of navigation services. By 2030, up to 40 million vehicles worldwide are expected to be connected to the group’s Automotive Cloud.
Seamless Integration and Over-the-Air Updates
TomTom, in turn, has developed a navigation solution that can be seamlessly integrated into the Wolfsburgs' digital cockpits and delivers regular over-the-air updates. The cloud-native solution is designed to quickly utilize up-to-date routing and real-time traffic information to provide the best route guidance and the most accurate estimated arrival times. If no data connection is available, the system switches to its onboard software, ensuring availability under all circumstances.
"With TomTom's proven support and expertise, backed by Volkswagen Group’s extensive connected fleet, we will bring many exciting innovations to market that will contribute to a safer, more time-efficient, and more intuitive driving experience," promises Francisco Moreno, Head of Navigation at CARIAD.
The joint development of further solutions is underway. The first models to feature the next-generation navigation technology are expected to be electric and will be launched in 2023. These models are touted to benefit from the range of an electric vehicle and routing that is far more precise than anything available today, according to the manufacturer. The development of new features such as lane-dependent navigation and lane-dependent traffic, as well as a personalized EV experience, are also part of the innovation cycle.
“Today marks another milestone in our relationship, as we announce that our state-of-the-art navigation solution will support the next generation of Volkswagen Group's digital cockpits - from volume to premium line - with the promise of stronger integration and ongoing innovation in the years to come," commented Antoine Saucier, Managing Director, TomTom Automotive.
