TIER: Greener E-Scooter Sharing with Swobbee Battery Boxes

More sustainable scooter-sharing is promised by Tier, which aims to test another decentralized approach with Swobbee's battery swap stations. This could reduce collection routes and emissions.

The micro-mobility provider Tier has announced a further expansion of decentralized and more sustainable charging solutions for its e-scooters and is now, for the first time, putting into operation a battery swapping station by the Berlin-based Battery-as-a-Service provider Swobbee. The charging and swapping station will be tested in Düsseldorf as part of a joint pilot project. Currently, the provider operates an e-scooter fleet of around 2,400 vehicles in the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. All e-scooters are equipped with swappable batteries. This eliminates the need for labor-intensive charging logistics, where the e-scooters would have to be collected daily and brought to central warehouses for charging, promoting the concept. Thanks to the swappable batteries, the local team of full-time employees can now replace empty batteries on-site with charged ones, significantly reducing travel distances and emissions, according to the company.

The Swobbee station in the Düsseldorf district of Oberkassel is an essential component of the new decentralized energy network, which is continuously being expanded. Additionally, the micro-mobility provider promises to use sustainable vehicles such as e-vans and cargo bikes for charging and maintaining the e-scooter fleet.

"Thanks to the interchangeable batteries of our e-scooters, we can make the operational management of our fleet even more efficient and sustainable," explains Peter Russ, manager for the Rhein-Main region at TIER.

The aim is for employees to reach 80 percent of the Düsseldorf e-scooter fleet within a maximum driving time of ten minutes, thereby reducing and avoiding travel distances and emissions. The sharing points of the Berlin startup Swobbee represent a novel charging solution for the booming micromobility sector.

Swobbee claims to be the world's first multi-manufacturer battery swapping and charging infrastructure with an intermodal approach for small electric vehicles such as e-scooters, e-cargo bikes, or e-scooters. This allows an empty battery to be swapped in just a few seconds. From the perspective of Tobias Breyer, COO of Swobbee, they offer the ideal solution for operating e-scooter fleets more efficiently and sustainably.
