The Smarter E/Power2Drive 2021: Expectations Far Exceeded

With 26,000 visitors over three days, high international participation, and a successful premiere of the "Green Hydrogen Forum," the organizer draws an exceedingly positive conclusion for the restart.

The organizer of the multi-trade fair The Smarter E Europe Restart, which took place from October 6 to 8, 202 in Munich, Solar Promotion, expressed great satisfaction with the restart of the event. The total of four energy trade fairs Intersolar Europe, ees Europe, the e-mobility fair Power2Drive Europe and EM-Power Europe, accompanied by two expert conferences (Intersolar Europe Conference and ees Europe Conference) and three fair forums, recorded around 26,000 visitors from 93 countries instead of the expected 15,000, with an international visitor proportion of over 50 percent. The organizer mentioned that they had not anticipated such a high turnout, especially the latter.

The strong response is due not least to the very dynamic growth and excellent long-term prospects of the involved industries: photovoltaics, battery and energy storage markets, e-mobility and green hydrogen as well as components, solutions, and new business models for the integration of renewable energies into the energy infrastructure. These sectors are expected to experience enormous growth across Europe in the coming years, even according to conservative forecasts. In the five exhibition halls, the four energy trade fairs presented everything related to the efficient generation, storage, distribution, and use of renewable energies.

Considering E-Mobility as Part of the Energy System

The integration of Power2Drive Europe into the innovation platform of the new energy world has once again proven its worth. For the mobility and transport sector to realize its potential, electric vehicles and charging infrastructure must be considered as part of the entire energy system. High-performance e-mobility batteries can be utilized not only as energy storage for vehicles but also as building blocks in the energy grid, the organizers argue. With electric vehicles, decentralized storage capacities would be made available for the energy transition. The foundations are Vehicle2Grid (V2G), Vehicle2Home, and Vehicle2Work solutions.

"Charging infrastructure is a central element for the success of e-mobility – and at the fair, we combine it with topics like storage, photovoltaics, and renewable energies. This way, the entire energy and mobility sector is represented at one event – this is extremely exciting for us," says Karl Kolmsee, Director Product Portfolio Management at Webasto Customized Solutions.

Personal Exchange is Irreplaceable

The event has especially shown how important personal exchange and collaborative work on innovative projects for the future of energy supply are for the entire industry, given this dynamic development. Moreover, it has become clear that sector coupling, as the decisive factor of the energy transition, is increasingly coming into focus, and green hydrogen is becoming a progressively important option for more closely linking the sectors of electricity, heat, and transportation through renewable energies.

The “Green Hydrogen Manifest” has provided important impetus here. The initiators Hydrogen Europe, German Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association DWV, European Electrolyzer & Fuel Cell Forum EFCF, and The smarter E Europe aim to set a clear signal for decarbonization and a sustainable circular economy. The next regular The smarter E Europe, including the e-mobility fair Power2Drive, will take place from May 11-13, 2022, in Munich.
