The newly approved environmental bonus has fully ignited the price war in the affordable electric car segment. Auto Motor und Sport researched and found out that the electric triplets from the VW group, VW e-Up, Skoda Citigo e iV, and Seat Mii electric, have been available for leasing at a low cost since early 2020. Colleagues who have taken advantage of this rate confirm this. For 129 Euros per month, "cheaper than a public transportation ticket." So we did our own research: It works! In the Munich area, we could have gotten it in no-extra-cost yellow for 128.14 Euros per month! We also found a Skoda Citigo e IV on the new car portal Carwow at another Skoda dealer for 12,548 Euros, over 9,000 Euros less than the list price, 6,000 Euros of which come from the environmental bonus – although the state only covers 3,000 Euros of the discount. The small electric car was slightly more expensive on Autoscout 24, where leasing started at 149 Euros.

The Renault Zoe Z.E. 40 Life was spotted by Auto Motor und Sport for 13,771 Euros, 8,979 Euros below the list price. There is also an additional 82 Euros per month for battery rental. Or 8,000 Euros all at once for a purchase battery. The colleagues found the Opel Corsa-e starting from 19,992 Euros, 10,607 Euros below the list price. Here too, the state only adds 3,000 Euros!

The fact that the E-Golf has suddenly become really "old" is proven by its rate: we already discovered it starting from 17,051 Euros cash price! VW is offering a massive discount from its own pocket – also to keep Dresden busy until the I.D. 3 rolls out there.

According to Auto Motor und Sport, the Kia e-Soul with a small battery (100 kW) is 9,630 Euros below the list price, found on Carwow starting from 25,350 Euros. The industry also expects that VW will definitely not give away its I.D.3, but will bring it to the market at rather favorable conditions. This is necessary given the already cheap electric cars.

What does this mean?

The pressure on the automotive industry continues. Supply bottlenecks should be over, and CO2 values need to drop massively in 2020. So affordable electric cars must enter the market. This includes phase-out models like the Golf 7 and minis like the e-Up, which are always under price pressure. It will be interesting to see how the new car price structure has sorted itself by the end of the year.
