Tesla Cybertruck: The Sharpest Character in the World!
Visually, the Cybertruck rides a fine line, as narrow as the stainless steel sheets of its cladding: While some people love it, others think it looks like a student workshop, where the designers apparently didn’t even have a bending machine at their disposal.
The fact is, we saw it in the USA on our trip from L.A. to Chicago and back MUCH more often than the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado EV, or the electric Dodge Ram. Second place after the Cybertruck in the frequency ranking across the vast country was occupied by some Rivian R1Ts…
So, partially electric door opened, climbed in and took a seat, of which there is plenty up front and in the rear! Plus, inside, there are edges everywhere you look: Even the steering wheel was designed to match the screen, and the controls resemble the worsened Model 3 to Model X without a steering column lever. However, you can easily find your way around the digital menu here as well.
Power? More than enough, but…
The steering has now been translated to match the edgy steering wheel; the suspension is firm, but it's a pity that the look also includes the comparatively coarse-tread pseudo-off-road tires, which negate some of the basic driving precision… Power? Sure, always more than enough, at least when unloaded. You could accelerate to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. But it doesn't really like high speeds, especially due to the tires and the massively increasing power consumption. And it's not great with visibility either...
Almost five tons of towing capacity and a lockable bed
But the Cybertruck is also designed as a work tool and a towing vehicle: You can tow up to 4,990 kilograms, which puts it among the top. It also offers a fully enclosed cargo bed at the back and a huge frunk at the front. On interstates, it’s worth closing the electric cargo bed cover because it massively improves aerodynamics – it doesn’t help much with visibility anyway. Then you can get closer to the touted 547 km range, of which realistically more like 400 kilometers plus or minus remain.
Overall, Tesla claims up to 1,897 liters of "lockable space" and 1,134 kilograms of payload. If you fold up the rear seat surfaces, you get another 1,530 liters, although Tesla is more likely referring to the absolute volume when filling the space completely with water or air. But at least it’s all somewhat well thought out.
The stainless steel shell isn't everyone's cup of tea
There's also the non-washable stainless steel exterior, which can subtly tarnish or get dirty over time, and then you don't know if it's supposed to look like that or if you need to wash it again or brush off the dirt with a wire brush.
By the way, we saw quite a few Cybertrucks wrapped! Often in white, with advertisements or crazy patterns. And the “Much higher with wide-track suspension” faction had already modified the first Cybertrucks – and put them on even less precise all-terrain (AT) tires. One way or another, this car ALWAYS stands out everywhere – even in the USA!
In the end, we disembark and find that sitting next to the Cybertruck is somehow more exciting than sitting in it... which is why our US colleagues have identified those for whom posing with their pickup truck is more important than working with it as the main target group...
What does that mean?
The Cybertruck is extremely powerful, minimally practical, and both load and towing strong, but: Primarily, it is a character actor and poser at Elon Musk's current level. Because if you compare the datasheets and prices and read the tests of our US colleagues, you will soon find that it can indeed do some things better than the Ford F-150 Lightning - but by no means to the extent that it stands out visually. In our colleagues' comparison of three, Motortrend ranked it ahead of the Ford F-150 Lightning, but clearly behind the Rivian R1T. We have attached the test as a film... Which means the Cybertruck is primarily distinguished by its looks: Sorry Tesla, the line between a poser and a true winner is indeed narrow...
