T&E welcomes progress in internal combustion engine dispute and calls for accelerated action from the EU

A compromise is emerging, which likely has more academic significance: Apparently, the FDP Ministry of Transport is yielding under bizarre conditions and could finally resolve the blockade of one of the most important EU projects of recent times.

The agreement on the phase-out of internal combustion engines in Brussels, apparently achieved after tough negotiations and subject to some legal details, has been welcomed by the environmental umbrella organization Transport & Environment, which has also called for resolute action.

"Europe must act quickly and provide clarity for the automotive industry, as European manufacturers are in a race with the USA and China. E-fuels remain an expensive and extremely inefficient distraction from the comprehensive switch to electric cars facing Europe's car manufacturers. Europe's and especially Germany's credibility in climate protection is at stake," warned Sebastian Bock, Managing Director of Transport & Environment in Germany.

The agreement on the phase-out of internal combustion engines by 2035 must now come into force without further delay, Bock demanded.

According to T&E, the agreement reached includes these demands from Germany to the EU:

  1. submit a proposal that allows the approval of pure e-fuel vehicles under the Euro 6 regulations
  2. present a delegated legal act that allows the crediting of e-fuel vehicles towards CO2 targets for passenger cars
  3. submit a declaration outlining the legislative approach that will enable the approval of pure e-fuel vehicles after 2035
