Swobbee installs battery swap station at Munich bike logistics hub

Delivery by e-cargo bike is intended to ease inner-city traffic. A station with exchangeable batteries, available to all logistics providers, is also expected to ensure smoother operations.

The Berlin-based GreenTech startup Swobbee has announced its involvement in the first cycle logistics hub in Munich. The showcase project for more sustainable city logistics by the mobility department of Bavaria's capital is now supplemented by one of the battery swapping stations available to logisticians for their e-cargo bikes. The new logistics center, which serves as a platform for various logistics companies, is managed by P+R Park & Ride GmbH, a service company of the city of Munich. The cycle logistics hub is located on the centrally situated Viehhof site and consists of several boxes that serve as temporary storage, as well as parking and charging areas.

Basis for the planning of a hub network

Currently, five logistics service providers deliver packages to private individuals and goods and pallets to companies, tradesmen, and construction sites on the last mile with state-of-the-art e-cargo bikes from this hub. In light of rising shipment numbers, this approach aims to ease the congestion in the highly dense inner-city areas and further enhance the attractiveness of Munich as a location, according to the project leaders. The pioneering project serves as a foundation for the city of Munich's planning of a hub network, which will also receive EU funding. The project is part of the economic traffic strategy “Urban Logistics,” a sub-strategy of the “Mobility Strategy 2035,” the roadmap for the mobility transition in Munich.

Quick to New Energy

The battery swap station is designed to ensure efficient use of electric cargo bikes, allowing logistics providers to exchange the empty batteries of their vehicles for fully charged ones in just a few seconds. This guarantees a continuous energy supply around the clock. Through this Battery-as-a-Service approach, companies can fully concentrate on their core business without having to set up and operate their own expensive charging infrastructure, store spare batteries, or endure downtime for delivery bikes due to charging, the provider advocates for the concept.

"Cargo bikes are a crucial part of urban mobility transformation. With the bike logistics hub, Munich once again demonstrates its strength in innovation and its reputation as a future laboratory. We are very pleased to contribute to making the logistics processes of participating companies, including our long-term partner Hermes, even more efficient and sustainable on the last mile with our Swobbee stations," adds Thomas Duscha, co-founder and CEO of Swobbee.
