Switch from VW Tiguan/Fiat 500e: Small electric car instead of a large SUV

Our colleague Julia Mogilevska took the big leap: After the end of her leasing contract, she switched from a combustion engine to an electric vehicle. She exchanged a VW Tiguan Diesel for a Fiat 500 Electric. Initial impressions show a lot of light but also some shadows.

The step of exchanging an SUV for a small city car was truly big and difficult for me. But as the name “city car” suggests, I quickly noticed the advantages of driving a small car in the city, and fully electric at that. But from the beginning: The leasing for my VW Tiguan TDI 4Motion DSG expired, and I needed a new car. Due to supply difficulties from manufacturers and costs, it simply wasn't possible to get a comparable car.

The offer to lease a Fiat 500e Icon three-door from the FCA subsidiary Leasys came at just the right time! And of course, the Bafa environmental bonus of 6,000 euros included in the monthly rate made the offer even more attractive: 150 euros for the electric Fiat instead of 250 euros for the diesel VW was simply too tempting.

Suddenly you get different parking spaces!

For two weeks, I have both cars; after that, I say goodbye to the Tiguan. Although I love SUVs and stand by that, I relatively quickly noticed how much better a small car is in the city. Parking spaces that were previously far too small are no longer a problem. The same goes for small narrow alleys, by the way. Plus, I'm now driving electrically, and that’s fun and good for the environment!

But driving electrically also means having to charge the car, and this is where I was quite frustrated at the beginning! Someone grabbed the last spot at the charging station right in front of me, and later I was charged a fee because the Fiat charged overnight. But what if you get home really late and need to charge? Should I get up at night to re-park? Definitely not!

Therefore, in my opinion, driving electrically only works really well and smoothly if you either have your own charging station at home or can charge peacefully at work. Oh, and I don’t even want to mention the issue with the different providers. An app that truly covers all charging stations would be great! Well, I’m still at the beginning of my e-mobility career...

The first drive on the highway was also "highly exciting" – especially seeing how quickly my 42 kWh battery suddenly headed towards zero. I really missed my Tiguan at that moment! Not only because of the range but also because of the comfort.

My conclusion:

I don’t want to miss the little Fiat 500e anymore; it's simply too practical for the city. But for those for whom a car is more than just a means of transportation, and that definitely applies to me, they simply want more comfort and significantly more space in the car. Hey dear Fiat, at the moment you are exactly right for me. Hey beloved SUV – in a few years, I’ll have you again. But then gladly fully electric. Julia Mogilevska/jr
