The Swiss have narrowly voted against the expansion of six highway sections. In a referendum on Sunday, nearly 53 percent of citizens rejected the projects. The Greens are delighted.

"Today marks the beginning of a transportation shift in Switzerland. The populace has rejected the backward transportation policy of the Federal Council," said Swiss Green Party Chairwoman Lisa Mazzone. In contrast, politicians from the national-conservative Swiss People's Party (SVP) fear even more hours in traffic jams.

Around five billion euros had been budgeted for the projects. The expansion would have affected sections of highways near Bern, Basel, Schaffhausen, and St. Gallen, among them were also three tunnel projects.
