Suzuki introduces the new S-Cross

In terms of electrification, Suzuki remains extremely cautious: In addition to the mild-hybrid turbo gasoline engine called "Boosterjet," a fully hybrid version with automated manual transmission will be introduced for the first time in the second half of 2022.

Suzuki is launching a new S-Cross, which remains just as conservative in terms of its overall features as its predecessor. Those expecting aesthetic or technical revolutions will be disappointed. In fact, Suzuki has rather subtly developed the bodywork, engines, and infotainment system. The cargo space offers a volume of 430 liters.

Mechanically mild-hybridized: Full hybrid to follow later, no electric version

The drive is powered by the proven 1.4-liter petrol engine with 95 kW (129 PS) in combination with the 48V SHVS mild-hybrid system. The turbo direct-injection engine delivers a maximum torque of 235 Nm between 2,000 and 3,000 RPM. Power transmission is via a six-speed manual gearbox, with an optional six-speed automatic available. The standard mild-hybrid system includes an integrated starter generator (ISG), a 48-volt lithium-ion battery, and a DC/DC converter that converts the higher voltage for the 12-volt onboard network. The ISG, acting as a 10 kW electric motor, assists the petrol engine during start-up and acceleration.

Thus, the "Torque Fill" function provides additional torque at low RPMs, allowing the vehicle to respond immediately to the gas pedal. The "Torque Boost" function supports until the turbocharger kicks in at around 2,000 RPM, ensuring more consistent acceleration. In the second half of 2022, Suzuki will expand the S-Cross's drive offering with a new full-hybrid version. The system combines a newly developed combustion engine with a motor-generator unit (MGU) and an automated manual transmission (AGS). It allows both hybrid driving and pure electric driving with the petrol engine switched off. The fuel consumption remains modest but not groundbreaking: combined, it ranges from 5.3 to 6.1 L/100 km according to WLTP, which corresponds to CO₂ emissions of 119 to 139 g/km.

A new generation of the audio system is entering the S-Cross, featuring a seven-inch display in the Comfort trim level and a high-resolution nine-inch screen in the top Comfort+ version. In addition to audio information and navigation system directions (Comfort+ only), it also displays images from the rearview camera or 360-degree camera (Comfort+ only), driving information such as fuel consumption and range, and information on the mild-hybrid system's energy flow. Users can easily connect their smartphones to the onboard system via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with voice recognition and Bluetooth hands-free functionality also included. The new S-Cross is front-wheel drive as standard, with the proven Allgrip Select all-wheel-drive system (available only for Comfort+ with six-speed automatic) also available. The driver can select four different settings via a rotary switch: in addition to the "Auto" mode optimized for fuel efficiency, there are "Sport," "Snow," and "Lock" with a fixed power distribution of 50:50. Depending on the mode chosen, the electronically controlled system regulates not only the torque transferred to the wheels but also the ESP and engine performance.

The safety and comfort equipment has been expanded

The new S-Cross aligns with its competitors again with its expanded package of driver assistance and safety systems, which work with the help of cameras and sensors. The features include a dual-sensor brake support (DSBS): the system uses the monocular camera and laser sensor to detect other vehicles and pedestrians, warns of an imminent collision, and initiates automatic braking if necessary. Additionally, the automatic models feature an adaptive cruise control with stop & go function: the adaptive cruise control in models with automatic transmission comes with a stop & go function. The 360-degree camera is also a nice touch: it offers additional safety and comfort. Four cameras (at the front, rear, and both sides) cover various perspectives, including a 3D view and a bird's-eye view for safe parking (Comfort+ only). Other features include lane departure warning with steering assist, fatigue and traffic sign recognition.

Two Equipment Lines with a Wide Range

The new Suzuki S-Cross is available in the Comfort and Comfort+ equipment lines. The former starts at 29,290 euros, which is just under 24,615 euros net. The automatic transmission costs an additional 1,500 euros gross (1,260.50 euros net). Comfort starts at 36,040 euros (just under 30,286 euros net), with the six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard here.

What does this mean?

In regions with strong Suzuki dealers, you see quite a few S-Cross – but for a new generation, the brand has been far too cautious here. The new S-Cross could have been a fully electric all-wheel drive wonder instead of another conventional petrol engine.
