Survey: Are affordable electric cars coming? Probably not ...

In the last survey, we wanted to know whether you believe that affordable electric cars will finally enter the market in 2024. After the survey concluded, it was clear: Even 20,000 euros is still too much for many for a car or van.

Our "gut feeling" was right: 20,000 euros is a price threshold where some already drop out when it comes to acquiring new vehicles. And by that, we don’t just mean pizza delivery services and couriers who endure in run-down small cars or care services that are simply looking for four wheels with minimal traffic space use but room for work equipment. Many private individuals and fleet operators also seem to find the prices currently too high – unless they are "adjusted downward" with cheap leasing rates (into which the full Bafa premium flows, but which is also being reduced).

  • In the end, only 23% (16 participants) voted for: Yes! Finally, many models are announced for under 20,000 euros, and the batteries are getting cheaper.
  • 31% of the participants (22 people) voted for: It will probably take until 2025. Before that, no one has announced a corresponding model, let alone put it into series production.
  • With 46% or 33 votes, almost half of the respondents clicked: No - Even 20,000 euros is unfortunately not "cheap" for many. Combustion engines are available for under 15,000 euros!

Which makes it clear: Driving is likely to become a "small luxury" again in perspective. And the times when surplus-produced small cars from the Fiat Punto to the VW Polo were usually sold off as grey-imported base models for 9,990 to 12,990 euros are likely over for good. The advantage: Mobility and models are seen much more differently today than they once were, and the multimodal mix is likely to increase, at least in metropolitan areas. Given current new car prices, many will consider whether a car is even necessary anymore or if mobility can be better organized in other ways.

What does this mean?

Driving is a "small luxury" – which is now once again perceived as such in light of rising car prices and still-expensive electric cars. The 20,000-euro threshold has to be crossed first!
