Stellantis STLA Frame: Up to 800-kilometer range in heavy electric SUVs and electric pickups

Everything goes: The new platform functions as a hybrid, hydrogen, battery electric (BEV), and range-extender electric (REEV) base and was developed for full-size trucks and large SUVs. Range up to 1,100 kilometers for REEVs or 800 km for BEVs, a payload of more than 1.2 tons and a towing capacity of more than 6.3 tons, plus all-wheel drive as well as 400-volt and 800-volt EV architectures with DC fast charging of up to 350 kW. First with Ram and Jeep.

The Stellantis Group has now presented details of its STLA Frame, a Multi-Energy Platform designed for BEVs, as previously announced. It targets large electric vehicles such as full-size pickups and SUVs, where the body is mounted on a frame. This is an important segment, particularly in North America and selected global markets. The platform is designed for a range of up to 1,100 kilometers in vehicles with a range extender and 800 kilometers in BEVs, a maximum towing capacity of 6,350 kilograms, and a payload of 1,224 kilograms, as well as providing a wading depth of 61 centimeters. In addition to the existing light commercial vehicles, pickups, and SUVs from Stellantis, STLA Frame vehicles are initially planned to come as pure BEVs and as Range Extended Electric Vehicles (REEV). However, the platform could also be used for internal combustion engines, hybrid, and hydrogen drives in the future.

With the REEV system, which combines a battery, front and rear electric drive modules (EDMs), an onboard generator, and an internal combustion engine, heavy loads can be transported or towed over long distances. Since there is no direct mechanical connection from the engine to the wheels, the generator supplies the EDMs with power to drive the vehicle and charges the battery as needed. This ensures extended range under load conditions. At the same time, the torque of the electric motors is used to take the vehicle's dynamics to a new level, outlines the manufacturer.

“Just like STLA Medium and STLA Large, STLA Frame combines unprecedented range with a new level of capabilities and performance. It offers our customers who need reliable and powerful trucks and SUVs to transport their families or supply their businesses class-leading range, payload, and towing capacity,” advertises Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares.

They hope to persuade customers who are still hesitant to try out their first electric vehicle with this, Tavares acknowledges. Additionally, the platform is expected to give a boost to the RAM and Jeep brands.

Durable and Rigid Platform with Low Weight

The platform is made of advanced high-strength steel and offers improved durability and rigidity with reduced weight. The widened center section houses the battery pack with reinforced frame rails that protect the battery in the event of a side impact. A continuous belly pan reduces air resistance and is intended to help maximize range. It provides space for liquid-cooled battery packs with 159 to more than 200 kilowatt-hours and is also designed to be compatible with future energy storage technologies.

The company developed and assembled front and rear EDMs with output of up to 250 kW, which provide all-wheel drive and can accelerate a vehicle from 0 to 60 miles per hour (96.6 km/h) in 4.4 seconds. Flexible suspension designs, including air suspension, are intended to offer an optimized ride for different driving conditions and load scenarios. The platform, in BEV models, can provide an 800-volt DC fast charge of up to 350 kW, adding 100 miles (or 161 kilometers) in just 10 minutes. In REEVs, with a 400-volt DC fast charge of up to 175 kW, up to 80 kilometers can be added in 10 minutes. Vehicles with the STLA Frame platform are equipped with bidirectional charging capability to supply external consumers.

Stellantis Stays Committed to Multi-Energy Approach

The Frame platform is one of four global BEV platforms under the group's "Dare Forward 2030" strategic plan. Following the presentation of the STLA Medium platform in July 2023 and STLA Large in January 2024, the portfolio is intended to ensure that Stellantis can provide the right solutions for all customers based on a variety of electrification scenarios. All global Stellantis platforms are designed and constructed for longer life cycles through the interchangeability of battery cell chemistry, EDMs, inverters, and software control, promises the company. And it is investing more than 50 billion euros in electrification by 2030 to achieve its ambitious goals: 100% of passenger car sales in Europe and 50% of sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the USA are to be BEVs by 2030.
