Stellantis brands significantly increase passenger car market share in Germany in 2021

The Stellantis brands have successfully ended the year 2021. Alfa Romeo, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Fiat/Abarth, Jeep, Maserati, Opel, and Peugeot recorded stable car sales in Germany last year despite the declining market, significantly increasing their market share.

Number two in Germany

Stellantis thus remains clearly number two in the important German automobile market and was even able to expand its position. According to preliminary figures, around 360,000 passenger cars of the Stellantis brands were newly registered in Germany in 2021 – this roughly corresponded to the previous year's figure. The bestseller was Germany's best-selling small car, the Opel Corsa, which almost 50,000 German customers chose. The group's passenger car market share thus climbed by around 1.3 percentage points compared to the previous year, to 13.7 percent.

"We can look back on a strong year and be proud of what we have achieved. Keeping new registrations stable in a significantly shrinking overall market and despite the restrictions caused by the semiconductor crisis is anything but a matter of course," said Stellantis Germany CEO Amaury de Bourmont. "In this very challenging market environment, we have performed excellently thanks to the great commitment of our employees and of course our trading partners."

Also in second place for electrified vehicles

Stellantis recorded significant gains, particularly in the market for electrified vehicles (LEV – Low Emission Vehicles) – that is, with purely battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrids. In December, the LEV share of the total registrations of Stellantis brands was around 31 percent, higher than ever before. The Peugeot brand also achieved a new record in December, with an LEV share of almost two-thirds, while the Opel and Fiat brands also reached new highs. In 2021, Stellantis brands were number two in the German market for battery-electric vehicles. The best-selling models were the new Fiat 500, the Opel Corsa-e, and the Peugeot e-208.

“We want to carry the momentum into the new year and continue our path to success. Our clear goal is to further improve our market position. In the coming months, we are bringing many new electrified vehicles to the market, including the new Opel Astra and the Peugeot 308 as well as the Alfa Romeo Tonale. These attractive, electrified models will give us additional impetus,” explained Amaury de Bourmont.

What does this mean?

The merger of PSA and FCA has unleashed new forces. The synergies seem to have healed the once ailing patients Opel and Peugeot. Only the Italians – with the exception of the Fiat 500 – have not yet overcome their difficulties.
