Stellantis and Samsung SDI have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a second battery production plant in the United States as part of the existing "StarPlus Energy" joint venture. Back in May 2022, Stellantis and Samsung SDI announced the construction of a first battery production facility in Kokomo, Indiana (USA). This facility is scheduled to be operational in the first quarter of 2025. It will have an annual production capacity of 33 GWh, instead of the originally planned 23 GWh.

“This new plant will help us achieve our ambitious goal of bringing at least 25 new battery-electric models to the North American market by the end of the decade,” said Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. “Together with our great partner Samsung SDI, we are further expanding our capacity in the United States – taking the next steps towards our goal of CO2 neutrality by 2038.”

As part of its “Dare Forward 2030” strategy plan, Stellantis announced that it aims to achieve a sales mix of 100 percent battery-electric passenger cars (BEV) in Europe and 50 percent battery-electric passenger cars and commercial vehicles in the United States by 2030. To meet these sales targets, the company is securing around 400 GWh of battery capacity. Stellantis is on track to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions in all sectors by 2038, Tavares explained. The remaining emissions will be compensated in the single-digit percentage range.

"With the establishment of the joint venture with Stellantis last year, we have created a solid foundation for our presence in North America," said Yoon-ho Choi, President and CEO of Samsung SDI. "The second plant will accelerate our market penetration in the USA and help Stellantis drive the transition to the era of electric vehicles there – with products that offer the highest level of safety and quality."

What does this mean?

The transaction is subject to the signing of the final documents. For Stellantis, the planned Gigafactory is to be the group's sixth battery plant. The location of the new facility is currently being evaluated. More details will be announced at a later date, according to Tavares.
