Solutrans 2021: Irizar ie truck - Electric vehicle with gas extender
The Spanish commercial vehicle manufacturer Irizar presented its ready-for-production concept of a low-floor distribution truck with electric drive and CNG motor as a range extender at the Solutrans 2021 in Lyon. The exhibited 6x2 chassis with a total weight of 28 tons and a payload of 18 tons combines a brushless synchronous electric motor from the Spanish marine and industrial motor specialist Alconza with 360 kW power and 4,400 Nm torque, which draws its energy from a 170 kWh lithium-ion battery made of NMC cells installed in the frame and packaged in Spain, along with an optionally available Iveco Cursor 8 CNG motor Euro VI with 160 kW that serves as a range extender and draws from two gas tanks with 164 liters each. Even when using fossil CNG, the vehicle is supposed to be 75 percent less polluting than a conventional model. The noise level is also significantly lower.
Various Variants, Motor and Charging Options
The ie truck is intended to be suitable for zero-emission use in city centers as well as with low CO2 emissions in metropolitan regions and surrounding areas, thanks to the optional combination of two drives. Charging is done via 2 x 80 kW CCS, but there are numerous charging options from 20 kW upwards. Alternatively, the e-truck can also be recharged via pantograph. A 2x4 version with a 160 kW electric motor is also available, offering a total weight of 10.5 tons, with a maximum battery capacity of 340 kWh, sufficient for 250 kilometers of electric range. A 150 kW charger can fill the batteries in two hours. Another option is the fully electric three-axle vehicle with the same range and a 240 kW electric motor, with a charging time of three hours at 150 kW. A four-axle version for heavier loads and applications is already in the works.
Low Entry, Quickly Opening Door
The low entry of just 370 millimeters over a single step and through a quickly inward-swinging door, as well as the three folding seats in the spacious cabin, are intended to make the vehicle particularly attractive for garbage collection services, but also for distribution trucks in food distribution, construction and crane vehicles, cement mixers, street sweepers, or other applications. Assistance systems include a lane change warning system and an active emergency braking assistant, as well as a crawl function that is also supposed to work on hills, relieving the driver. Optional camera mirrors are available, as well as sensor-based warning systems for obstacles or the blind spot.
In terms of the body, the versatile chassis is supposed to offer high space utilization and good load distribution, additionally scoring points with a small turning circle. The automatic suspension adjustment with various selectable working heights according to the situation is supposed to guarantee balanced handling on all surfaces and under all conditions.
After the first models were presented in 2018, practical tests in 15 cities across Europe recently completed the model's series introduction. The first ten garbage collection vehicles have now been produced.
