A small town can also go electric: Electric bus debut in Polish Zdunska Wola, where the electric vehicles will start operating for the transport operator from next year.

Although buses from the Polish bus manufacturer Solaris are already operating on the streets of Zdunska Wola, there are no electric ones as of yet. This will change starting next year when the ordered Solaris Urbino 12 electric will commence operation. (Photo: Solaris)

The small Polish town of Zdunska Wola is embarking on its electric mobility future – the municipal public transport company Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacji (MPK) has ordered four Solaris Urbino 12 electric buses along with charging infrastructure from Solaris – they are set to be deployed in regular service as early as 2022. The total contract value is reported to be just over 10 million PLN gross.

Details: 280 kWh battery, 80 kW DC charger

With the appropriate configuration of the batteries and charging infrastructure, the 12-meter-long electric buses can be operational up to 24 hours a day, according to the manufacturer. The ordered buses will be powered by modern high-energy batteries with a total nominal capacity of 280 kWh – charging is done via plug, with the charging port located above the right front wheel arch of the bus. Using two chargers each equipped with two connections, either two Solaris electric buses can be charged simultaneously at 40 kW each or one at 80 kW.

The electric solo buses offer space for 75 passengers each, with 29 of those on seats. Additionally, four seats in each vehicle will be specially adapted for the transport of passengers with disabilities. The 2-2-2 door configuration is intended to ensure quick passenger changes at stops. Good air quality is ensured by a fully automatic air conditioning system, and comfort is provided by features such as illuminated USB sockets.

The safety equipment includes an alcohol interlock device as well as a closed driver’s cabin with an almost floor-to-ceiling semi-glazed protective wall. Furthermore, cameras monitor the passenger compartment and the road in front of the vehicle, and secure the vehicle when reversing.
