Sledge Sharing in Lithuania

With winter in full glory, pandemic-stressed families are flocking to sled on the white hills and fields – even in Lithuania's capital Vilnius. The local car-sharing service CityBee recognized multiple opportunities here and now offers, according to its own statement as the first company worldwide, a sled-sharing service. Over 100 vehicles have been equipped with a sled and disinfectant in the trunk. Before and after the trip, the sled is to be disinfected to guarantee the safest possible usage for the next users.

A bit of everything, everywhere

The locations of these vehicles are strategically chosen. Spread throughout the city, oriented towards the suitable sledding areas, the vehicles can be found and rented via an app. According to the company, this aims to counteract larger crowds, reduce encounters in more frequented recreational areas, and designate alternative, more isolated routes to relieve more well-known hotspots.

More than a service

CityBee itself declares that the project primarily has a symbolic character. Vilnius has over half a million inhabitants; even a tenfold offer would not provide noticeable relief. But the company signals that it recognizes and takes seriously the desires and needs of its target audience. The politics also show satisfaction:

"The vision of sustainability is becoming more and more established; in Vilnius, several mobility alternatives have been implemented over the last few years. The capital is always open to offering its citizens new and exciting projects; sled-sharing thus fits exactly into the development of Vilnius," explains Remigijus Šimašius, mayor of the city.
