Škoda: PV system in Mlada Boleslav drives climate-neutral production forward
Škoda Auto has taken an important step towards climate-neutral production and, in cooperation with ČEZ ESCO and ŠKO-ENERGO, has installed three rooftop photovoltaic systems at its headquarters in Mladá Boleslav and the parts logistics center. Covering an area of over 10,000 square meters, the new solar installation is as large as more than 15 tennis courts and, with its over 5,400 photovoltaic modules, can generate more than two gigawatt hours (GWh) of emission-free electricity annually. This energy could charge approximately 25,000 Enyaq 85s, as outlined by the manufacturer.
„At Škoda Auto, we continuously evaluate and work on reducing our ecological footprint. We see this power plant as crucial in achieving our ambitious but realistic goal. By 2030, vehicle and component production at our Czech sites should be carbon neutral," commented Andreas Dick, Škoda Auto Board Member for Production and Logistics.
The first cooperation between the three partners in the field of solar systems began at the end of 2019. The solar modules at the Škoda Auto Service Center in Kosmonosy cover around 2,200 square meters and generate more than 450 megawatt hours (MWh) annually. Thus, they cover almost 17 percent of the entire energy demand of the facility. In February 2021, the cooperation was expanded and a solar power plant with 3,020 panels was installed at the Škoda Parts Center. Together, these modules achieve a nominal output of 2,146 kilowatts peak (kWp).
In other plants, the photovoltaic system in Aurangabad, India has been connected to the power grid since 2018. With more than 1,440 MWh generated last year alone, it has reduced dependence on purchased energy by 40 percent. In February 2023, a rooftop solar system followed at the Chakan plant in Pune, covering up to 30 percent of the plant's power consumption.
